Sounds of the Hall in roughly 33 1/3 minutes!
In this week’s edition of Saturday Night Shut-In ladymisskirroyale hosts the airing of a hand-selected post-punk mix offered to the Hall by noted rock historian and Friend of the Hall Simon Reynolds! This is some cool stuff that you may or may not be familiar with—and definitely something different than the Richard Baskin-oriented fare for which your regular host is known to spin.

That was a pretty good way to wake up and have my bottle of water. I was surprised how many I knew, but I’m sure I only got the obvious ones.

You can all thank Simon Reynolds or read his book, “Rip It Up” which discusses all of these bands (and many of these tunes) in detail. For example, while “Poptones” would not be the PIL tune I would have chosen (esp. as a woman) his discussion in the book is interesting.
Also, my choice of Crispy Ambulance as the Mystery Date earlier this week was chosen with this mix in mind. Crispy Ambulance, an early Factory band, were musical colleagues of Joy Division, our first band in the mix. They are mentioned in the biopic, “Control” and in “24 Hr. Party People.” There are some other Crispy Ambulance tunes on YouTube and their sound is more variable than I would have supposed.

Just out of curiosity, Stan, how many of these did you have already? I’m guessing most.
Coo, even though I recognise that I was helped by being a Brit who grew up through that time I’m incredibly chuffed!
I own or have owned at least eleven or twelve of them, ironically I’d forgotten the title of the B52s one, so thanks to 2000 Man for remembering that one. The rest were due to those many years of listening to John Peel playing experimental music (often at the wrong speed). In fact, if it hadn’t been for John Peel at least ten of those bands would never have received any radio exposure, and it’s unlikely that the already limited number of us who have heard of them (and fewer who bought them) would ever have done so – he really was that important to British music.
One thing’s for sure: I was not in the running for The Gift.
Hopefully the vendor who supplied this outstanding gift will have more goodies for us in the future. This thing coming Happiness Stan’s way is really special.
A guy in my nephew’s band was one upping me a few weeks ago and it was mostly with techno stuff, so I don’t think we’re even on the same page, so I had to look up the band that did Mind Your Own Business. I was all excited that I got a weird one, and it turns out it’s just a cover I was thinking of! Damn! Otherwise, I’d have written, “Dunno – hate it.”
Apropos of Post-Punk, Laura Kennedy of the Bush Tetras died Monday from Hepatitis C. She was a great man.
