In this week’s edition of Saturday Night Shut-In ladymisskirroyale hosts the airing of a hand-selected post-punk mix offered to the Hall by noted rock historian and Friend of the Hall Simon Reynolds! This is some cool stuff that you may or may not be familiar with—and definitely something different than the Richard Baskin-oriented fare for which your regular host is known to spin.
If ladymisskirroyale, Simon Reynolds, and input by the legendary Mr. Royale are not enough to make you set aside some quality time with your computer, then you’ll want to tune in for your chance to win The Gift, perhaps the most treasured contest prize Rock Town Hall has known to date. Tune in and find out from ladymiss how you can win! (And if you missed the details, the goal is to identify the tracks played: artist and title. Post the playlist in the Comments section or email Mr. Moderator at mrmoderator (at) rocktownhall (dot) com
.)
[Note: The Rock Town Hall feed will enable you to easily download Saturday Night Shut-In episodes to your digital music player. In fact, you can even set your iTunes to search for an automatic download of each week’s podcast.]
That was a pretty good way to wake up and have my bottle of water. I was surprised how many I knew, but I’m sure I only got the obvious ones.
Joy Division – Atmosphere (or is that the name of the album? I can’t remember, I didn’t like them much)
Talking Heads – Once in a Lifetime
The Fall – Think Big Things? I don’t know the title because I just have that one album
Devo – Jocko Homo
Dunno
Dunno – X Ray Spex?
Pere Ubu – 30 Seconds Over Tokyo (Northeast Ohio’s second song of the show!)
Dunno – Hate it
Gang of Four – Natural’s Not In It
Dunno – hate it
B-52’s – Give Me Back My Man (I named this song on one note!)
Dunno
Dunno – I remembered it, though
Dunno – Kind of liked it
Chicks on Speed – Mind Your Own Business
Dunno – Is it Siouxsie?
A strong start, 2K! Yes, that last song is Siouxsie and the Banshees. I can see at least one Townsperson wants to claim THE GIFT!

I will double-check the track list but, by golly, I think Happiness Stan has nailed it! The most coveted of RTH prizes, The Gift, will be sent his way. Thanks for playing, and thanks to the Royales and Simon Reynolds for providing the cool mix. I’ll have some thoughts to share on this stuff later.
You can all thank Simon Reynolds or read his book, “Rip It Up” which discusses all of these bands (and many of these tunes) in detail. For example, while “Poptones” would not be the PIL tune I would have chosen (esp. as a woman) his discussion in the book is interesting.
Also, my choice of Crispy Ambulance as the Mystery Date earlier this week was chosen with this mix in mind. Crispy Ambulance, an early Factory band, were musical colleagues of Joy Division, our first band in the mix. They are mentioned in the biopic, “Control” and in “24 Hr. Party People.” There are some other Crispy Ambulance tunes on YouTube and their sound is more variable than I would have supposed.
Thanks for listening!
Just out of curiosity, Stan, how many of these did you have already? I’m guessing most.
Coo, even though I recognise that I was helped by being a Brit who grew up through that time I’m incredibly chuffed!
I own or have owned at least eleven or twelve of them, ironically I’d forgotten the title of the B52s one, so thanks to 2000 Man for remembering that one. The rest were due to those many years of listening to John Peel playing experimental music (often at the wrong speed). In fact, if it hadn’t been for John Peel at least ten of those bands would never have received any radio exposure, and it’s unlikely that the already limited number of us who have heard of them (and fewer who bought them) would ever have done so – he really was that important to British music.
One thing’s for sure: I was not in the running for The Gift.
Hopefully the vendor who supplied this outstanding gift will have more goodies for us in the future. This thing coming Happiness Stan’s way is really special.
A guy in my nephew’s band was one upping me a few weeks ago and it was mostly with techno stuff, so I don’t think we’re even on the same page, so I had to look up the band that did Mind Your Own Business. I was all excited that I got a weird one, and it turns out it’s just a cover I was thinking of! Damn! Otherwise, I’d have written, “Dunno – hate it.”
Apropos of Post-Punk, Laura Kennedy of the Bush Tetras died Monday from Hepatitis C. She was a great man.
