After Willie Nelson played a song (why?), they did a little featurette on Petty. It looks like there’s going to be a Flying V themed stage. Petty said he gets 12 minutes, so I guess that’s 3 songs.

  2. saturnismine

I’m tellin’ ya…”the waiting” is the sleeper. I’ve got a twenty spot down on 300 to 1 odds that they’ll play “the waiting”.

  3. Good prop on Hoodie references! I think 2.

    Mary Jane 100,000 to 1.

Bogdonavitch’s (sp?) movie is out on DVD. It’s called Running Down A Dream. He’s doing that. Even odds.

I was traveling in Africa a few years back and caught benmont tench.

    No long coats. Security risk.

  4. Also, Petty’s hair has undergone an artistic comeback. He’s going hatless tonight.

  5. Hey Mr mod – thoughts on Jordan Sparks?

  6. Mr. Moderator

Good call on “Running Down a Dream”. I’m tapping into someone else’s wireless signal from Chickenfrank’s place. Hopefully the signal will hold. I’m here with Chick, Andyr, our friend Chris, and…get this: Links Linkerson!

Andyr, I’ll be speaking to you later.

Not being an American Idol watcher, I knew little about her. I had no idea she was Philipi Sparks’ daughter. Her mouth is giagantic; looks like she could fit her mouth around a helmet.

Hey, I caught Alicia Keys’ warm-up act. I have a little crush on her. Her music’s actually not bad either.

  8. BigSteve

Actually his beard, hair, and face seem to have undergone complete renovation.

I think Running Down a Dream is a lock. Probably Refugee too. Since I don’t think you can play something as slow as The Waiting or Free Falling, I’m pulling for You Wreck Me as an appropriate choice for a contact sport.

  9. Sethro just joined us.nice drive by the gints.Good Audi ad

  10. Mr. Moderator

“I Won’t Back Down” – complete with video accompaniment of first-half highlights.

Andyr just called out “Key interception”: so close!

  11. Don’t you think they’ll do “American Girl”?

  12. Mr. Moderator

Is there a teary-eyed, former porn-star-turned born-again Christian like Kurt Warner’s wife who we can track during this game?

  13. Mr. Moderator

“American Girl” wouldn’t suprise me. Stevie Nicks is an Arizona girl, right? Does she get the guest vocalist call? I’ve seen her sing lead on “I Need to Know”.

  14. If she’s there they they will do “Stop Dargging My Heart Around”

  15. Mr. Moderator

Andyr makes a good point: No matter how great this Patriots’ team is, you can’t take the ’72 Dolphins’ Look away from them.

Guess what: Links won’t pick a team to root for.

  16. Mr. Moderator

Is Maroney’s ponytail a new Look? I thought he usually let his dreads flow freely.

  19. Mr. Moderator

So do we have confirmation on Michael Jackson yet? Did we miss Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson?

  20. sammymaudlin

    Runnin’ Down a Dream
    Even the Losers
    I Won’t Back Down

Nicks is AZ all the way. As are The Tubes.

  21. Mr. Moderator

Throw the red flag! That’s definitely the Pats’ ball.

    Nice throw-away Eli!

  22. 2000 Man

Mick Jagger is selling Dell laptops with his surprise techno club hit, Charmed Life.

    Man, that song sucks.

  23. BigSteve

Paula Abdul did some teenpop-like song during the pre-game show, which makes sense since she’s like 70. It was like karaoke with elaborate theme-parkesque choreography.

  24. How was Randy?

  25. Mr. Moderator

    How was Randy J?

  26. Listening to some live Petty from the Playback set now. How will his halftime show compare?

Pats will win but not cover the spread.

  27. Mr. Moderator

Sethro wants to know what ’70s band Steve Ferrone (sp?) – the Stan Lynch replacement – played in. Was it Tower of Power?

  28. sammymaudlin

    Average White Band

  29. BigSteve

Randy Jackson was interviewed along with Abdul after the performance by Ryan Seacreast (sp?), saying something about how the song was actually from his album, I think. I think the performance must have been pre-taped, because Abdul didn’t seem to be winded during the interview.

  30. BigSteve

Yes, I didn’t know till I watched the recent Petty documentary that Ferrone was British.

  31. Halftime. Here we go……

  32. sammymaudlin

I found this about Ferrone on the Wikipedia: The Black and White Years are an indie electro-rock band based in Austin, TX. Formed in 2006, the band consists of Scott Butler, Landon Thompson and John Aldridge. The group met while attending college in Nashville, TN.

They most recently finished production of their debut album with producer Jerry Harrison of Talking Heads and Modern Lovers. The record, set to be commercially available February 12, features the drumming of legendary Steve Ferrone.

  33. BigSteve

They’re playing Free Falling over the PA while the analysts analyze.

  34. sammymaudlin

    Check out his Orbison moves!

  35. what’s with the flying V stupping the heart?

Mike Cambell as Adam Durowitz (sp)

  36. sammymaudlin

I like the Cobra stripes on Tench’s guitar.

  37. Won’t Back Down – Yuk. Crowd Singing along – double Yuck.

He is in good voice thoguh.

  38. Are there any blacks in the audience?

    Free Fallin’s – Bite Me!

  39. sammymaudlin

    Double neck!!!

  40. sammymaudlin

I used to live behind and shop at the mall the Free Fallin’ vid was shot in. I’m just that cool.

  41. sammymaudlin

I love people that use a camera flash from like a mile away.

  42. Good to see Benmont still do the head nod.

  43. Where is Ray Cooper?

  44. Nice rack shot during the solo for Runnin Down the Dream

  45. sammymaudlin

As far as half time shows go that rocked but not as much as Prince rocked it last year.

  46. sammymaudlin

andyr- Thanks for pointing out the rack shot. I had actually typed in my appreciation but as it seems that I frequently walk the gutters alone around her I held off.

Regardless, it was indeed a nice rack shot.

  47. That’s cool, Sammy. I’m still lauging at the the thought of the Prairie Dog

  48. Mr. Moderator

Thanks, all. I’m still holding out hope for a Michael Jackson appearance.

  49. Rack shots or not, all the people paid to dance and look like they were regular audience members enjoying themselves were pretty laughable. There were a lot of auditions for new reality show slots going on among the audience.

  50. BigSteve

    Mwall, your cynicism is dispiriting.

  51. Mr. Moderator

To the contrary, I find Mwall’s cynicism inspiring. Thanks, man.

  52. It was pretty amazing how so many people had so many lighters out all at once.

  53. Mr. Moderator

Have you heard about Belicheck’s friendship with Jon Bon Jovi? Supposedly he sang some standard (something like “Stand by Me”) with Bon Jovi at a private party a few years ago. Does YouTube have a clip?

  54. 2000 Man

Ugh…Belichick/Bon Jovi. When Bill’s job was to dismantle the Browns for Art Modell’s move, we found out about Bel Jovi and as a city, Cleveland rose up and fired their owner. It was worth it.

  55. Mr. Moderator

So we’ve got 2 shots of Giselle, 3 of Peyton (where’s Archie?) – make that 4 shots of Peyton! Do the 2 shots of Jordin Sparks count as 2 distinct AI shots?

Was Jeremy Shockey drinking at the bar?

  56. Why should Benmont explain his name?

  57. Mr. Moderator

Benmont Tench Fan raises a good point. Why should he have explained his name?

  58. sammymaudlin

Why should Benmont explain his name?

Because it confuses and frightens me.

  59. BigSteve

Isn’t Tench from a well-to-do family? At least in the South, people of a certain class commonly give the mother’s surname or some other family name to a child as his (or occasionally her) first name. The thing to explain is not shortening it for common use to Ben.

  60. Benmont Tench doesn’t need to explain a damn thing! He practically wrote the book on “tweedy impertinence” among classic rockers. I think he had patches on his corduroy blazers as early as Damn the Torpedoes. “Ben” just doesn’t fit.

I say this wholly without irony. I am an unabashed Tench fan.

Sure, but are you THE benmont tench fan?

  62. Sure, but are you THE benmont tench fan?

For the record, no. But it’s good to know your allies!

  63. sammymaudlin – Nothin’ to be scared of. Benmont’s a really sweet guy!

  64. Mr. Moderator

I’ll have to say that for all the “prop bets” we set up in advance of the halftime show, I expected the least out of the Benmont Tench Naming Rationale one. As it turns out, it may have been the most satisfying topic from that thoroughly professionan and, therefore, slightly disappointing halftime show. Cool stage and cool stage disassembly shot, as I believe BigSteve pointed out. Thanks for checking in, Benmont Tench Fan. Don’t be a stranger!

Tench’s playing has been excellent through the years, and think about it: Has a rocker ever come as prepared for the middle ages? It’s as if from the first album the guy had a game plan for not aging in an embarrassing way. Classy!
