Sounds of the Hall in roughly 33 1/3 minutes!
In this week’s edition of Saturday Night Shut-In a busy Mr. Moderator let’s the music do the talking. There will be words; they just won’t be coming out of your host’s mouth. Almost all the tracks played tonight are demos, alternate takes, live bootleg records, and so forth. There’s even an unreleased rehearsal recording. Enjoy. Hopefully this busy stretch will ease up and I can grab time with our long-promised guest Townsman.

Fairport Convention, “Who Knows Where the Time Goes” (Until downloading some live tracks from this album I’m not sure I knew Sandy Denny and the violinist [Dave Swarbick, or something like that] crossed paths in the band. I always associate his entrance with the underrated “dude” album, Full House. Is there a story behind Denny leaving the band? She would go on to play with most of her Fairport Convention bandmates almost immediately before dying, wouldn’t she?)

The Rolling Stones, “Memo From Turner” (Isn’t the better-known version technically credited to solo Mick Jagger from the soundtrack to that Nicholas Roeg movie?)
Yep, the version of “Memo From Turner” used in the film is officially a Mick Jagger solo release that features unknown studio musicians as well as erstwhile friend-of-Stones Ry Cooder on slide guitar. There’s a third version of “Memo” featured on the leftovers album Metamorphosis. It’s a little faster and is said to have at least a couple of the Stones.
Swarbick was a guest player on Unhalfbricking, then joined as an official member of Fairport on Denny’s last album with the group, Liege and Lief.
Thanks. Most of my Fairport collection exists on “best of” comps. I only own 2 original albums: the first and Full House. I used to own others but most of the deep cutz that weren’t on my “best of” comps were boring.
Any idea why Sandy Denny ever left the band? Any idea why any of those people left so frequently? From a great distance they all seem like humble, friendly sorts. They’re a band that should have kept adding members, to the point where they would have been a 12-piece folk-rock brigade. The hell with all their solo albums, Fotheringay albums, The Bunch album, etc.
