Who remembers Old Skull, the kiddie-skatepunk band from the late 1980s?

  2. I definitely remember them. Tom Scharpling had a reunited version of the band on The Best Show on WFMU a few years ago.

I am not their mother, but I love this:

  4. GENIUS! If this were a Battle Royale you’d be parading around the ring with the belt held over your head.

    Ha.

But seriously, if there was ever a kid band performance that rocked harder, I’d like to see it.

…though I guess it doesn’t qualify as “only a mother could love.”

We can’t forget that brief phenomenon known as Hanson, can we?

And to those who fuss at this, I could have just as easily put on Menudo.

  8. I am very pro Mmmmbop. In fact, I spent a sizable chunk of my (first) bachelor party, not at a strip club, but in my brother’s basement drunkenly playing Mmmbop a number of times, in addition to butchering some other songs.

I had an album of theirs…

It’s like an outtake from a French Little Rascals.

  11. Here are the pre-Donny, Osmond Brothers. I know their mom must have been proud.

  12. They were the kids Sonic Youth hyped. Remember ’em well.

I really like Baby Rammstein, especially the drummer/harpist! Seriously.

  13. I think we’ve bonded on this before, cdm, but MMMBop is a GREAT pop song… and I will fight anyone who says otherwise!

Menudo is a different beast altogether, and not comparable at all.

  14. We’d be remiss if we didn’t include some preternaturally precocious Asian children:

The host reminds me of the character who interviewed Bill Murray in “Lost in Translation.”

  16. I enjoyed their novelty malocclusions.

  17. There’s a big difference – the Hanson kids wrote, sang, and played their own music while Menudo was strictly manipulations by production teams.

  18. Exactly….Plus, their songs were much more crappy and forgettable.

Sadly, the Toulon brothers who were the core of Old Skull battled drug problems for much of their lives. Both died in the past couple of years – one from an unspecified illness and the other from suicide.

Yep, I remember seeing them once in a while on Walt Disney’s TV programs in the 1960s.

I don’t know what you’re talking about. That Menudo stuff was really significant. And stuff.

  22. THAT, I did not know. Pretty sad stuff…

  23. Yes, and they do like to yell on those Asian TV shows, don’t they?

  24. mockcarr

looks like a young Mike Nesmith, perhaps Michel N’est-ce pas

  25. One of the quirks of being married to an immigrant is that eventually, you pick up your in-laws’ tendency to cheerfully point out every single person that passes through the public eye that shares the family ethnicity…

So anyway: these kids in the video… they’re Romanian!
