UPDATED — TWICE!
Time’s up! There are officially *no* No-Prizes to be awarded this time. However, everyone’s a winner, as I share a few choice tunes that I still suspect some of you will know.
First up, Dennis Coffey’s 1970s funk opus “Scorpio.” Even if you don’t know anything about Dennis (the man who introduced the wah-wah pedal to Norman Whitfield), you’ve surely heard Bob Babbitt, the guy who plays the bass solo in the middle there. I always loved this tune — enough to give the bass solo a pass!
Next, Curtis Mayfield’s greatest love poem, “The Makings Of You.” If I ever get married again, I plan to feature this song in the ceremony *somewhere*.
Here’s the one that BigSteve *almost* got right: “Willie the Pimp,” off of Zappa’s “Hot Rats,” and featuring Cap’n Beefheart on vocals. Now *here’s* a song that could use some judicious editing.
Lastly, “He’s a Doll,” by The Honeys — the vocal group that featured Brian Wilson’s first wife (whose name I forget). This track was produced by Brian, who, as Mod pointed out, was in full Spector soundalike mode.
There you go, guys! Better luck next time — the coveted No-Prize goes BACK IN THE HOPPER!
HVB
Note that you must both identify the song *and* the performing artist!
I don’t like the way he’s looking at me OR putting on that glove.
My man!
I just took a quick listen between stuff here at work. I think I hear the following:
1. Badfinger, “Come and Get It”
2. David Bowie, “Young Americans”
3.
4. The Who, “Goin’ Mobile”
5.
6.
7. Cheap Trick, “California Man”???
8.
9.
10. Leon Russell, “Tightrope”??? (I think you’re one of the only other Townspeople how digs this guy.)
That’s all I can get to for now. This is a killer mix!
Mod is quick out of the gate, but he needs to listen more closely. Thus far, the only tracks correctly idetified are:
1. Badfinger, “Come and Get It”

Was there Chris Bell’s I Am The Cosmos in there? My Own Time by the Bee Gees. Slow Ride? Definitely that’s She Sold Blackpool Rock from Honeybus towards the end.

You Make My dreams Come True – Hall and Oates
Ramblin Gamblin Man – Bob Seger
Slow Ride – Foghat
Cuddley Toy – The Monkees
If not For You – George Harrison
Townsmen Andyr and Mockcarr have come up with a few more. Plus, I’m gonna give Mod his “California Man,” though he put it in the wrong spot in the order. Since y’all are lazing out on the numerical order of things, it only seems fair.
1. Badfinger, “Come and Get It”
2. Barry White, “Never Gonna Give You Up”
3. Chris Bell, “I Am the Cosmos”

4. AC/DC “It’s A Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock ‘n Roll)”
16. Harry Nilsson, “Cuddly Toy”
Put me down as a long time huge fan of Leon Russell. I think maybe it was Geo thru whom I first heard the Asylum Choir album (is that right George?)which set me on the path.
I think his string of early ’70s albums were phenomenal. Then he had to go get married and start putting out duet albums with his wife. There’s a Last Man Standing thread there.

2. Barry White, “Never Gonna Give You Up”
3. Chris Bell, “I Am the Cosmos”

12 is The Ooogum Boogum Song by Brenton Wood.
13 sounds like live Elvis Presley? And that missing piano opener sounds like ELO’s Evil Woman, but I know you wouldn’t do us like that with a double shot.
It doesn’t pay to be late on this challenge! 7) Issac Hayes/Shaft? I hate myself for falling for that, but it does have a similar sounding production.
I can’t believe you didn’t give me “California Man” right off the bat because I didn’t properly sort out the order! From that point forward my spirit was crushed. I probably would have won this thing by now if not for you, Hrrundi!
Had I been able to identify the bagpipe as a bagpipe I would have nailed that AC/DC song. That one really bugged me.
Good call by Andyr, I believe, on the Barry White number!
1. Badfinger, “Come and Get It”

Note to Chickenfrank: you need to be more specific than that, brother! But you’re on the right track with #13!
You bastard. .6 seconds of Elvis burping on stage, and you want a title. “Can’t Help Falling in Love”? “CC Rider”? “Kentucky Rain”? A shout out to the Memphis Mafia?
Hey, Chickenfrank — chill, my man. You’re closer than you think with that “Kentucky Rain” guess!
Seriously, this Elvine moment is iconic; one of the most salacious asides in his catalog.
This post has now been UPDATED! Observe! Learn!
I heard One on One by Haulin’ Oats, didn’t I? I’m not losing it, right?
Now I need a Q Tip!
These are hard! No wonder no one’s gotten them yet, although I probably would have gotten them if you hadn’t crushed my spirit by failing to recognize my “California Man” spot the first time solely because my sequencing was off.
The first one sounds like the production of a Jackson 5 song, although I can’t place a particular song.
The second clip has the sound of early TSOP. I’m guessing it’s a Thom Bell production, but I can’t place the song!
Then there’s the obvious Elvis clip, but I’m not recognizing the song. I know it’s not “Guitar Man”, but it’s something of that level of quality.
I don’t know what’s going on with that Santana/egg beater collaboration.
Then there’s the Hall and Oats/Steely Dan-sounding electric piano. No clue.
Next I sense the intro to a Phil Spector production, but it’s not any of the songs that immediately come to mind.
The last one sounds familiar. Is it an AC/DC ending?
Hall & Oates “One on One”?
The ‘Santana egg beater collaboration’ is Capt. Beefheart’s voice, presumably accompanying Zappa’s guitar. It’s not from Hot Rats, so I’m assuming it’s from Bongo Fury. I’m not that familiar with the album, but the voice is unmistakable. Debra Kadabra maybe?
1. Badfinger, “Come and Get It”
2. Barry White, “Never Gonna Give You Up”
3. Chris Bell, “I Am the Cosmos”
4. AC/DC, “It’s a Long Way To the Top (If You Wanna Rock and Roll)”
5. Cheap Trick, “California Man”
6. Bee Gees, “In My Own Time”

Okay, so it’s time for a few deus ex machina moments to help guide you even closer to the coveted No-Prize:
– The first one is not a Jackson 5 number — and it does *not* feature the entire “Funk Brothers” crew. However, it *does* feature one of them, on bass — and if you saw the “Standing in the Shadows of Motown” movie, you ought to know at least *something* about this song!
– I’m shocked and disappointed that nobody seems to recognize that Elvis number. Doesn’t *anybody* have the “From Elvis in Memphis” LP?
– BigSteve is both very right and very WRONG in his analysis of the Beefheart/mystery guitarist number. Come ON, guys — this is from a relatively popular Zappa album!
– VERRRY interesting on the notion that there’s a Spector production in the mix. There isn’t. But the guy who produced this number was trying really hard to make you think there was one. Berlyant ought to know this number.
– I’ll just spill the beans on the closing number, and give Mod a half-point, out of guilt on the “California Girls” fiasco: it is indeed AC/DC — the final chord and squeal from “Shot Down in Flames,” off of “Highway to Hell.”
– Nobody’s identified the sweet instrumental segment in the middle there — of all RTHers, I would have hoped Mod could identify it. If you’re still stuck, I *know* that e. Pluribus Gergley could I.D. it in a second.
I say again: try harder!
HVB
p.s.: Maudlin is currently in the lead for the no-prize.
I stand corrected — it turns out that funk monster that starts the new sampler off *does* feature the “Funk Brothers” in their 1971 configuration. The wah-wah guitar should be a clue for the geeks among you. It showed up on a lot of Temptations recordings.
I got the Elvis one with the extended sample, it’s “Power of My Love”. Haven’t had a chance to listen to the others again yet.
Thanks for that half-point restitution, HVB. That means a lot. I’ll continue to TRY HARDER as I get time today.
Something of a dubious honor considering it highlights my apparent “ear” for ELO and Hall & Oates…
Man, these remaining tracks are tough! I just tried again. I know nothing about popular Zappa albums.
I’m going to take Mod’s tapping out as a sign that this contest is officially over. Check the post for a full reveal of the mysterious tunes that so flabbergasted the RTH collective!
Damn, I was going to come home and check to make sure it wasn’t Willie the Pimp, only to discover I no longer have Hot Rats. Damn. And I can’t believe no one else got it after I did the heavy lifting.
And funny you should mention Honey. I was thinking about Brian Wilson’s wife (Marilyn I think) during the recent Last Man Standing thread about recording duet albums. It’s not a whole album, but I believe that’s her duetting with Brian on the song Let’s Put Our Hearts Together on Beach Boys Love You. I’ve never heard the Honey album.
Fuck. I knew that was Curtis Mayfield. I fast forwarded thru Super Fly last night trying to find it. Alas that’s the only CM that I own. Man, I could taste the no-prize.
EXCELLENT challenge, Hrrundi. I know all those remaining tunes you listed, but not well. I used to have that Honeys album on tape. I remember it being pretty good.
Sammy, you’ve got to get yourself some more Curtis, especially the Impressions stuff he did in the many years prior to Superfly. Lots of tremendous songs and productions.
