Bruce Hornsby and Brent Mydland, by a fan

I love rock ‘n roll fan art. Not that I could do better, but it almost always reduces the fan’s hero to a state that runs counter to said fan’s admiration for the artist. That’s life. I appreciate being able to find pieces such as the loving tribute to Bruce Hornsby and Brent Mydland above, during Hornsby’s stint with the Grateful Dead. Gotta love the care the artist gave to Hornsby’s hair.

I invite you to join me in a celebration of rock ‘n roll fan art. The link to the best (ie, worst) piece of fan art will be awarded a very special rock ‘n roll-related prize. Let the Scavenger Hunt begin!

  1. Suburban kid

I’m too scared to do research for this. All I’ll say is that when I was a young pup I made a Ramones-themed American flag with red and blue construction paper. The stripes were made of Bazooka comics and instead of stars, I just attached the picture sleeve from the Rockaway Beach single.

  2. Do bad fan tattoos count? If so, there’s no shortage.

I like this one of Freddie Mercury.

It kind of came out like David Johannsen in Freddie’s suit.

  4. Gotta love bad fan tattoos! Yes!

  5. Oh man, do I have a bad fan art story regarding Bowie to tell! Too much going on at the moment, but maybe tonight.

  6. Zappa or Joe Walsh?

The file name gives you the answer. Thankfully.

I kinda like the laissez-faire attitude towards representational accuracy in this “portrait” of Jimi Hendrix:

  8. This one’s for 2K. The sketch was submitted for consideration in Rock Town Hall’s fierce Mt. Rushmore of Rock competition.

  9. This one’s actually got some charm and imagination: Henry Rollins as a Hunchback-like creature from The Flintstones.

Iowa State Fair, Elvis sculpted out of butter. Ironically the sculpture has a lower fat content than Elvis when he died….

  12. I’ve seen plenty of Dead Milkmen logo tattoos…but this young lady is the reigning queen of fan art:

    That’s commitment…

  19. He’s got the expression of one of those guys on Monty Python who wear a handkerchief on their head. What’s with those guys, anyhow, and where’s Happiness Stan to sort this all out?

  20. I seem to recall that they all have the last name of “Gumby” but I’m not sure why. They were an absurdist take on “the Man in the Street”, right? If Happiness Stan was here, he’d probably say I was 100% correct.
