Greetings. At the urging of Chief RTH Labs Liaison Hrrundi V Bakshi, my dedicated staff set about attempting to determine once and for all which of the two classic Kinks tracks — “You Really Got Me” and “All Day and All Of the Night” — is superior. This we attempted to do with the aid of some extremely sophisticated sound analysis machinery, decades of research notes and, of course, the patented, exclusive Stratomatic™ analysis and compositional software, to which only RTH Labs has access.
[audio:https://www.rocktownhall.com/blogs/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/01-You-Really-Got-Me-All-Of-the-Night1.mp3|titles=You Really Got Me All Of the Night]Through the use of all the technologies at our disposal, we were able to produce a new piece of music, weaving both songs into one contiguous piece, that proved once and for all that — scientifically speaking — the tunes have an identical quotient of every required Rock Element. In layman’s terms, they are equally “good.” As always, I invite you to listen for yourself. You will find that your notions of categorical and/or overall superiority for your preferred song are quite irrelevant.
Thank you for your time, and your ongoing interest in the rational, quantitative analysis of rock and roll.
The results demonstrate a high degree of clinical significance!
Yow.
I betcha 9 out of 10 classic rock listeners wouldn’t recognize anything out of place with that mashed-up guitar solo.
I was talking to a bartender this week at the Greene Turtle near my office. I had just heard Free, Aerosmith, and CCR in succession and and remarked — “wow, you’ve really got the classic rock flying in here today” — she sighed and said “All day and all night.”
Impressive work! Let me submit for further analysis “Don’t Ever Let Me Go,” which was, I think, intended as the follow up to “You Really Got Me” but was left unreleased for many years. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O5fWNzoo2zM
Well done, Mr. Fro.! If you get to it before I do, please combine “Lawyers, Guns and Money” with “Back in Black”. They aren’t as copy-cat as the Kinks tunes, but they have nearly identical count-offs and tempos, and are in the same key with many of the same chords.
Did you work with Giles Martin and Cirque du Soleil on this? Would like to see French acrobats try the triple lindy to this mash up.
Dang, how many lines can you end with the words that rhyme with “go”?
At the .05 level?
Not necessarily Ray’s greatest moment as a songwriter. More like Shel Talmy said, “We need a follow up to You Really Got Me. In four minutes.” Yet, still, I like it.
Can’t wait for your follow-up “Catch a Wave and Go Sidewalk Surfin’ With Me.”
Good work!
aloha
