I just found out about this new compilation this week. It’s a collection of Randy Newman compositions from his songwriter-for-hire days in the ’60s. Artists featured include Dusty Springfield, Eric Burdon and the Animals, and Fats Domino. It appears that album came out in April of this year on Ace Records, a British label. Hey, BigSteve and Dr. John: You guys hear about this album? Looks pretty cool. Details here.
Cilla Sings Randy!
Alan Sings Randy!
Dusty Sings Randy!
I been having that CD. It’s pretty cool. They could easily do another volume, which they might if it sells, which it probably won’t. No one’s going to like all of it. I’ve never understood what was so great about Nilsson. And they didn’t even choose my favorite Irma Thomas RN cover, going with While the City Sleeps, a very good song, over Anyone Who Knows What Love Is, which is very dear to my heart. And they have Dusty doing my least favorite RN song. But that Cilla Black song is awesome. Elvis Costello sang it on Kojak Variety.
Philly phans will like the O’Jays doing Friday Night, which sounds like Mink Deville. And Erma Franklin, Aretha’s sister, doing the bluesy Love Is Blind rules. Not to men tion Have You Seen My Baby? answering the rock trivia question, what song was covered by both the Flamin’ Groovies and Fats Domino?
