Sounds of the Hall in roughly 33 1/3 minutes!

On tonight’s episode of Saturday Night Shut-In Mr. Moderator mourns today’s death of lyricist Hal David, reflects on the instructional film Easy Rider, and calls for the arrest of Clint Eastwood. Should be a pleasant show.

Welcome back, Mod. We missed you!

As I’ve mentioned before, one of things I like best about SNSI is being exposed to music I haven’t heard before (and may never have heard of before). Such is the case with this Ronson rendition of “Slaughter on Tenth Avenue.” I’ve always known that title as a ballet, first choreographed by George Balanchine to music by Richard Rogers for the 1936 musical, “On Your Toes.” NY City Ballet (home of Balanchine choreography) added the ballet to their repertoire in the 60’s, where it pushed the ballet envelope as it featured a Caucasian female lead and an African-American male lead. Outre!

And hearing of how “Easy Rider” provided you some life lessons and guidance, I am reminded me of Sarah Vowell’s story of how “The Godfather” provided a similar function for her:

Lastly, was that bed music a reference to my Paul Young link? Sure sounded similar (although more cultured)!

  2. The dB’s song sounds like a rewrite of Matthew Sweet’s “The Ugly Truth”, which sounds like a rewrite of Buffalo Springfield”s “Mr. Soul”. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

  3. My apologies for misidenttlifying Modern English as the ’80s artist covering “Only Something There to Remind Me.” It was Naked Prey, right?
