Watching the All-Star Jam clip of The Kinks performing the exquisite “Autumn Almanac” that Mr. Todd just posted, I’m reminded of perhaps what is – for me – the most disappointing letdown in a favorite rock artist’s Look. How cool is Ray Davies’ Look in 1967? How cool is Dave Davies’ Look, for that matter? Sure, getting old’s a bitch, and I’m not getting any younger myself. Somehow, though, Ray’s long, thinning, dyed hair – possibly with some combover action in play – makes him look too much like the questionable characters he portrayed in both song and stage persona circa early-70s. For me, that’s a letdown. I didn’t grow up thinking I might model my Look after a sleazy hustler. I know it’s petty and wrong to express such a feeling, but I suspect you harbor your own Look Letdown candidate.

Ray’s look has immensely improved since he got rid of the mullet around the time he finally broke The Kinks up. He needs to get back in touch with his Dickensian side. He should always be seen in public wearing a scarf, even in the summer.
OK, I’m living in the past. What else is new? I see that Ray’s progressed well past the combover stage and accepted it. Good for him! Sorry, Ray. Sorry, everybody.
That said, I still look forward to your painfully petty and shameful admissions of Look Letdown regarding a favorite artist.

The worst thing is when they try and hide it. I completely agree. However I shamefully admit the Look Letdown of David Lee Roth really bums me out. He was the Mane. Indeed he may be the very definition of the Rock Mane and it’s hard to look at him now. When his pic shows up on the rotation in the RTH header, it makes me sad.
DLR is a Look Letdown I can imagine that hit hard for a lot of hard rock fans from our generation, but what are you thoughts on his more recent, short haired, Slightly Demented Jewish Uncle Look? I find it much easier to swallow.
Like I said, its definitely better to go with reality. This is what I had a difficult time with.
