This is the most exciting find I’ve uncovered in some time. Can someone please explain what this is…and why? Thanks.

  1. After a little bit of research at imdb, I came up with the “what”. It appears to be from a 1983 movie called “Get Crazy” (aka “Flip Out”). The synopsis makes it sound pretty dreadful (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085551/synopsis). Something to do with a rock promoter, a theater lease, and the big New Year’s Eve show. Lou plays Auden, a “metaphysical folk singer, event of the ’70s, [and] antisocial recluse.”

The rest of the cast is interesting, but also a clue that it might be a trainwreck of a film. Ed Begley Jr. plays a concert promoter, with Fabian and Bobby Sherman as his henchmen. Malcolm McDowell is Reggie Wanker, “a Mick Jagger spoof.” Howard Kaylan, Lee Ving, John Densmore, Coati Mundi, Clint Howard, Paul Bartel, and Daniel Stern are some of the other cast members.

The “why” may be an existential question better left unanswered…

I may have even seen that movie lo these many years ago. It sounds like one of those kitchen sink pop culture grab bags that got made back then in the wake of Kentucky Fried Movie — Americathon, Eat the Rich, etc.

But I *love* the sound of that live backing track. That’s obviously the Street Hassle/Bells era band, and you almost never hear Lou sing so ‘rock.’ He should get a sore throat more often.

tdw, I don’t want to embarrass you, but I believe this is your first post to the Halls of Rock. If so, this was an outstanding debut. Very helpful – I’ve been a little off all day, I think because of the shock of having found this previously unknown clip. I’d been thinking I needed to see Phantom of the Paradise from start to finish, but now I think it’s more important I see this likely trainwreck of a movie.

You’re right, BigSteve, this is a different sounding Lou than we’re used to hearing. It does have its charms.

I’m surprised more people haven’t seen this. It’s directed by Allan Arkush, a big rock and roll fan who directed ROCK AND ROLL HIGH SCHOOL and the ELVIS MEETS NIXON movie. It ran on cable a lot in the eighties and is a boisterous silly goof about putting on a big New Year’s Eve rock show. Lou is a rock star in transit for the entire film and he finally arrives after the film’s credits roll to perform his original tune “Little Sister”.

  5. I own this movie on VHS and the soundtrack on LP, believe it or not. It’s a wonderfully bizarre little trainwreck of a movie, and I highly recommend it to all.

However, this song has nothing to do with anything, and it’s not from the movie. Someone has simply taken this song I don’t recognize and put it over clips from the film.

From tdw..Malcolm McDowell is Reggie Wanker, “a Mick Jagger spoof.” Howard Kaylan, Lee Ving, John Densmore, Coati Mundi, Clint Howard, Paul Bartel, and Daniel Stern are some of the other cast members.

Clint friggin Howard!!! In any Ron Howard movie there is always the painful “Clint Howard” moment where he makes his cameo in the film. Howard’s latest one even has Clint in the trailer. It just plain hurts.

Who says Lou’s never animated?

In “Lou” of All-Star Jams, while Gerry is on vacation with Sammy, I’ll use this space to give props to an ad for an upcoming appearance by Townsman Shawnkilroy:

i remember this stupid promo video when it came out.

what a waste of a cool graphic sensibility on an uninspired, shit tune (“my name is mock”? the what now ???? gimme a break).

imagine lou reed attempting all those graceful balletic moves and trying to fly around like that. ha!
