Is it just me or does Manfred Mann’s pronunciation of “deuce” bother you? Every time I hear this cover, all I can think of is: Did anyone in the freakin’ booth say “Ummm, I’d hate to be wrapped up like a douche. That would be really uncomfortable.”
I mean there were probably 100 people who heard this before it was pressed onto vinyl…and it’s sung about 60 times. An ode to feminine hygiene?
It’s not like he mispronounced a word that became harmless. It sounds like DOUCHE!!
Sorry, just had to vent. What went on here???

I don’t know about douche, but the brainiac who submitted the lyrics here can’t even spell “deuce” right.
But what the heck is a “new-mown chaperone”. Pray tell…
I’d go as this guy:

Man, now I’m in the wrong thread!
I’ve always been perplexed by this. When the song came out, and like, at the onset of puberty, the use of “douche” in a song brought out my immature best.
Yes, after learning the real lyric from the Springsteen original I thought the pronunciation in the Manfred Mann’s Earth Band version was a stroke of juvenile genius. What on earth was the intent, however, is another matter.
As a young teen, my hippie midwife mother gave me a lecture about never letting a guy convince me that douches were necessary. Even cherry scented. An embarrassing discussion, to say the least. But it was balanced out by reproductive health pamphlets left on the coffee table…I grew up in a liberal household.
A quick search on YouTube elicited one Feminine Hygiene song (with hygiene spelled incorrectly, hmphh!) but from the complaining, male point of view.
Instead, as fellow townspeople, it is important that we unite and celebrate a woman’s monthly flow and all that goes with it. (And never underestimate the importance of Wings!) I give you The Period Mix, the best part of an otherwise forgettable movie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2gMNTYvWTY
And remind you that Greta Gerwig is starring in that new Noah Baumbach movie, “Frances Ha.”
(That douche reference was confusing to me in Blinded By the Light, too.)
Yeah. Never understood this, obviously. Cut loose like a deuce. Wrapped (wrecked?) up like douche. Has anyone ever asked Bruce how he feels about this?
I want to hate that guy but that was funny.
Women could probably amuse themselves with the reatcions of men if they use banana douche.
A responsible adult with a fresh hair cut?
