The Back Office has asked me to pass along that we can’t currently accept user additions to the poll due to some new auto-porno-link-spamming system. A remedy is being researched.

  1. I recently had opportunity to viddy an occelent requisite-te-te – ‘Before the Music Dies’ that attempts to analyze the state of the current music ‘industry’ and answer the basic questions: how is it possible for a real ottist to actually make a living in the barren Clear Channeled autotuned landscape that dominates the marketplace? And how is a MUSIC fan to cut cut thru the spoon-fed sludge and support creativity?

Great interviews with Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt, Branford Marsalis, Dave Matthews, Les Paul, and Doyle Bramhall II – among many many others – but it’s the insights of two guys that never really made my radar before that steal the show: Questlove of the Roots points out that currently his band is now the ONLY black band signed to a major label; and Steve Poltz (Rugburns) shines as a genuinely dedicated musician trying to keep the dream moving forward on a shoestring and a great story well told.

There’s a website. Check it out if you can…

Sounds cool, Telewacker – and sobering. I’ll have to check this out. Thanks.

  3. Well, the overview of the meltdown in the traditional music industry – records and radio and MTV is a little bit sobering, but what really comes out is the sheer joy and unstoppableness of people who make music because THEY HAVE TO MAKE MUSIC! People who are musicians DESPITE the music industry. It’s really a celebration of the convergence of cheap, but studio-quality tools in the hands of artists, coupled with the means to distribute them directly to audiences and how that has upended the traditional power relationship between the ‘record industry’ and creatives who have been OPPRESSED BY THE MAN! Man!…

Here’s one of the websites that seems to have good info:

oh, and do NOT miss the opening clip of Billy Preston fronting Ray Charles’ big band, singing ‘Agent Double-O Soul, and sporting an amazing banana yellow suit. He looks exactly like the Peanut-Butter-Jelly-Time hoofing plantain…now that’s entertainment!
