Please file under “Who knew?…Not me!”
I’m not even sure which way to go with this. My 13 year-old inner-child wants to simply say,
Mrs. Maudlin said,
This gives me a much better appreciation for this song in a Shirelles kinda way. AND gives me even less respect for Soft Cell if that’s even possible.
I suppose all that I want to say is I really like this song as performed here. I never really hated it before but…eh. So I’ll guess I’ll leave it at that.
Oh, and she was Marc Bolan’s gal at the time of his death and was behind the wheel of their Morris Minor when they crashed. And I think, like, she played keyboards and sang in T.Rex. Yes? Still…I like this song.
Interesting, very interesting. Good detective work, Sammy!
Maybe this is one of those songs that when mentioned to our British friends, they would just sigh and think, “Duh” (being too polite to say anything such as “You wanker, of course I knew that song.”). Any Brits out there who can weigh in?
BTW, I like the Tainted Love version, especially when it would segue into “Where Did Our Love Go” but this version is more fun. I imagine a roomful of people doing the frugg or something like that .
PS – as an aside, you are the only other male I know, other than Mr. Royale, to use the word “taint.” I didn’t realize it was so common in the vernacular, but then again, it’s not a word I would have used regularly. I learn so much on this site.
Definitely NSFW, but here’s a little history behind the classic Taint Magazine. In the opening bit alone you’ll see future stars of; Arrested Development, Breaking Bad and 30 Rock.

I knew of this for at least 25 yrs. It was on the Soul Shots series that was put out on Rhino Records back in the late 80s. I still have all of them on cassette. Also, I hate to do the P-N, but the car that was involved in Marc Bolan’s death was a Mini, not a Morris Minor
I knew this. I didn’t mind the Soft Cell version. Did it make my list of characteristically ’80s songs that I liked even when they were popular? It could have, or maybe it was disqualified for having been a cover of a ’60s song I would have been expected to like.
We are gentlemen in your presence, ladymiss.
That, my friend, is one of the finest Pince Nez moves ever invoked! 🙂
I admit that I may be wrong on this as I’m only going by what I’ve read on the internet. If what I’ve read is correct though then I will need to Pince Nez your Pince Nez.
A Morris Minor is a Mini, sometimes called a Morris Mini-Minor, a Morris Mini and sometimes just called a Mini, especially in the UK.
Here’s a pic of one http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Morris_Mini-Minor_1959.jpg.
The car Bolan was in was reported as a 1275GT model.
Here’s a YouTube of a “Morris Mini 1275 GT” doing a canyon drive. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ywFxZfG4JE
Her’s a 1971 “Morris Mini” for sale in the UK http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/list/33/mini%201275%20gt/
Here’s another one for sale http://www.classiccarsforsale.co.uk/car-advert/morris/mini/1974/187269/
Here’s an eBay sale of a Morris sales “catalogue” that features the 1275 GT. http://www.ebay.ie/itm/MORRIS-MINI-MKII-COOPER-MKII-S-CLUBMAN-1275-GT-MINOR-MORE-BROCHURE-1969-1970-/230963022294
And I saw this on a brochure too “Minis were available as an Austin or a Morris, the official titles being “Austin 7” or “Morris Mini Minor””.
So it would seem that a “Mini” can referred to in a variety of ways and still be “correct”.
First, here’s an article from the Hemmings Motor News blog about the various types of the classic Mini:
http://blog.hemmings.com/index.php/2013/04/08/whats-in-a-name-tracking-the-classic-minis-moniker/
Second, here’s another Hemmings blog article about a Morris Minor for sale to show what it looks like:
http://blog.hemmings.com/index.php/2013/03/13/hemmings-find-of-the-day-1958-morris-minor-1000/
Finally, here’s a picture of the crash scene. “Mini 1275 GT” is on the driver’s side (UK) door:

Hmmm, I seeee. Well then, here’s a picture of a “Morris MINI 1275GT” emblem
And here’s one actually on the trunk of one:
Your point to prove that your Pince Nez is “right” and my position (that we are both correct) is “wrong” is a harder one to prove.
Oh and…
That red pic above with “Morris MINI 1275GT” on the back? Here it is from the side:
where it says Mini 1275 GT.

I also really like the Supreme’s reference in the long Soft Cell version.
I’ve been silent from the Hall for a bit with this and that going on (currentl excuse – being in Italy) but as a long time T. Rex fan and as a fan of Gloria Jones’ Tainted Love from long before Soft Cell, I’ll thrown in a few more tidbits. Although she didn’t write Tainted Love, Gloria Jones was a co-writer on two classic songs, Gladys Knight’s If I Was Your Woman and the Diana Ross-Marvin Gaye duet My Mistake.
First time I heard of this version of “Tainted Love” by Gloria Jones. I really like how it still sounds so cool even today. Still sounds modern. Its timeless. BTW I listened to Marilyn Manson’s version too. Very hard edged in my opinion.
“Taint – for the reader between two worlds…It’s neither here nor there.”
You are so kind.
Those magazines made me weep.
