Dec 262013
It’s the day after Christmas. Whether you celebrated or not, I hope you had a marvelous day. In the true spirit of the holiday… sowhatchaget? What new music-related items have entered your household?
Santa brought me a new, sparkly red amp, a set of glasses decorated with images of cassette tapes, and an awesome book on legendary guitars, with a foreword by Billy F Gibbons.
HVB: What’s with the middle initial in your boy’s name? Has that been going on for some time, or is this how Billy distinguishes his literary side?
Santa brought me the Beatles at the BBC, vol. 2 and also Mark Lewisohn’s Beatles book, “Tune In.” I also got the CD of Raymond Scott’s violin sonata, which I’ve wanted forever, and a book about George and Ira Gershwin, which was a slightly left-field gift but I’m looking forward to checking it out.
But a sparkly red amp sounds pretty awesome, better put that thing to good use right away.
Sounds cool, cher! I’ve been meaning to pick up that BBC vol 2 set. Let us know how the Lewisohn book is. Isn’t it supposed to be the most in-depth, obsessive bio of the band ever?
Here’s a gift that just showed up on my Facebook feed, courtesy of Scott Krauss. I’m always on the lookout for Pere Ubu footage from this tour:

The “F” thing is new to me, though it seems to me I’ve seen that somewhere before. That book looks cool!
Hey, I’ve got an idea: let’s guess which guitars are in it. No peeking inside at Amazon. I see Clapton’s/Rundgren’s SG is on the cover. I’m going to say that Hendrix’s white “Star Spangled Banner” Strat is in there. Peter Green’s Les Paul with the out-of-phase pickup. Billy EFF Gibbons’ Pearly Gates. Lennon’s Epiphone Casino. Clapton’s “Blackie.” How am I doing so far?
As far as what I got — a deluxe, expanded edition DVD of “Walk Hard: the Dewey Cox Story.” A promise to cover the expense of cleaning up either a.) my slap-dash pickup install job; or b.) my buzzy, reverb-don’t-work-no-more Blues Junior amp.
Glad you all had a merry day.
Please let Kevin Shield’s Jaguar be in it!
Our Christmas was surprisingly light on music. Slim made me a 2013 Best Of cd (post to follow soon) and a couple of dvds that include music (Bottle Rocket, Big Lebowski). But really the best gift, which I can heartily recommend and wished I had thought of is this book: http://www.cicadabooks.co.uk/a-scene-in-between/
A friend gave it to Slim and he’s been pouring over it ever since. There are great band photos, some interviews, some band posters and plenty of long hair. For those of you how love (or want to learn more about) the British indie scene from 1980-1988, check it out!
A post-holiday foray at Amoeba records is on our horizon, thank goodness.
Here’s another review. It focuses on the fashion of the scene, but really, it’s a great band photo compilation: http://thequietus.com/articles/13524-a-scene-in-between-indie-book-review
Tremendous idea, HVB! Continue guessing. I will cross-reference answers later, not being sure that I’ve yet memorized all 101 guitars. You are definitely right re: all your guesses, HVB, expect I’m not sure that Hendrix’s white Strat made it.
No Kevin Shields Jaguar, ladymiss, but there are some similar guitars from other post-punk guitarists!
I got the White Light/White Heat reissue on vinyl (my original 80s pressing with the white cover is long lost), two Howlin’ Wolf LPs, and an original Kinks UK pressing of All Day and All of the Night b/w I Gotta Move.
I received that Beatles CD set too, listening to it now.
Cobain’s Fender Mustang?
Any Bo Diddley monster rectangles?
Jimmy Page’s double-neck guitar?
Yes to both – and stupid me just realized that the book’s cover gives away a number of guitars – not that you or anyone else worth his or her RTH Supernerd points would be looking.
Indeed! This entry, as I began reading out of order, told me what the “ES” in various Gibson guitars stands for: Electric Spanish. The double-neck is an “ESD-whatever number,” or something like that, for Electric Spanish Double.
I really didn’t get anything musucal from my family this year.I’m going to wait until Saturday to see what I got from my friends. I did get a Best Buy gift certificate & jeez, it was so hard to find anything half-decent among the sparse amounts of CDs & DVDs. I had to settle for the Yellow Submarine DVD, the two albums by Rodriguez that were surprisingly there & a Byrds best-of CD.
I did get the Beatles BBC Vol 2 by myself when it came out. It’s pretty good for what it is.
Yeah, I see Micawber gets a front cover mention. Keith talks about that one a lot.
I got a gift certificate from my favorite record store (Music Saves – go there for all your cool indie rock needs if you’re in Cleveland) and one of my sons bought me a book by Preston Lauterbach called The Chitlin’ Circuit And the Road to Rock ‘N Roll. Right off the bat it looks like the kind of thing I’ll like so much I’ll have to keep putting it down or I’ll just sit and read it straight through. Sometimes you just have to make a book last!
How about George’s psychedelic Strat?
Roger McGuinn’s 12-string Rick?
Brian Jones’ teardrop Vox?
Bono’s holstered Gretsch 🙂
Shockingly, if memory serves, no George guitars!
You have nailed McGuinn’s Rick and Jones’ Vox.
You holstering crack has locked up our Comment of the Month award.
Kevin Howlett’s “The Beatles: The BBC Archives.”
“366-page hardcover book drawing on rare photographs and previously unpublished BBC interviews to tell the full story of the Beatles”! So now I’ll Know

I’m Jewish, but I got this for Hanukkah: http://www.mergerecords.com/score-20-years-of-merge-records-box-set
Oh, and a lot of the 33 1/3 books: Radio City, Armed Forces, Meat is Murder, Let it Be (Replacements), Marquee Moon, Pink Flag, Spiderland, and Fear of Music.
Also Stop Making Sense on DVD.
BB King’s Lucille
Clarence Whites Telecaster
Joe Strummer’s Tele
Pete Townsend’s smashed up Ric
Buddy Holly’s Strat
Johnny Ramone’s Mosrite
I got Look Me In the Eye, a book about a guy with Autism who goes on to find success as a guitar tech for KISS.
I now need to figure out why some of these guitars didn’t make it in the book. I’m not sure about Lucille, believe it or not. I’m pretty sure no Townshend guitar makes it. Same goes for Buddy’s Strat. Clarence White’s Tele would have been good, but only McGuinn’s Ricks got in. Strummer’s Tele and Johnny’s Mosrite are in the book.
