  1. a horn section translated to guitars

so if you look at it rhythmically like:
    “boom-boom, crack, boom-boom, crack”

the “boom-boom’s” would be a couple of baritone saxophones and the “crack” is a trumpet section

the guitar solo would be translated into Clarence Clemens falling down a flight of stairs

the simplest way I can think to explain it… LOL

  2. Man, Sloopy is really letting it all hang out in that video! And The McCoys must be bummed about the very poor turn out for their outdoor show.

This has an extra verse. You usually don’t hear the verse about the red dress on the radio.

“Hang On Sloopy” was one of those big hit songs that was played on the radio that made an impression on my then 3-yr. old mind.

I don’t think those were the real McCoys (pun somewhat intended) on that video. It looks like something that was made in the ’80s or afterwards. Here’s a vintage video for comparison:

Finally, that guitar sounds like the one on the Kingmens’ “Louie Louie”

  4. Those are some visionary shag haircuts, if this was an actual shoot from the time of the single’s release.

I look forward to HVB’s analysis of the guitar tone in this special mix used only, to my knowledge, in the video.

It amuses me to think that someone has a credit somewhere, “impersonated a McCoy in made-for-karaoke video for ‘Hang on Sloopy’ (alternate mix with bonus verse).”

I think a 3-year-old mind is precisely the right demographic for the song, which exhausted its cuteness a ways back for me.

Mind you, it’s the official rock ‘n’ roll song of the state of Ohio.

  6. Got to be a remake — Derringer redid this song in 75 on the album Spring Fever, so I bet it’s from that era.

PS What a freaky album cover.

It’s our official song because of The Ohio State University Marching Band. The dimwits we have in Columbus wouldn’t know who the McCoys were, let alone that Rick Derringer was born in Ohio (or who Rick is for that matter). People add O-H and I-O to the song. I won’t tell you if I’ve done it or not.

I saw that video at a karaoke night once. That woman certainly seems to be dressed comfortably, shall we say.

What’s with the orchestral percussion dudes in the back?

  9. I saw her on an episode of Love Boat!
