  1. I see where Paul McCartney is on a new song with Kanye West and Rihanna. I think this is the second such single in a few weeks. I know a couple of weeks ago I read about one with Kanye. I’m not sure if this latest is different or a remix with Rihanna or what.

Haven’t heard either in any case so what follows isn’t a comment on the music. As far as Macca goes, though, how does this strike anyone? It seems to me the latest in Paul’s seemingly never-ending quest to be the avant garde Beatle, i.e., John.

I mean, what’s the point at this point. Is this move trying to set records (another number one hit!), be relevant, broaden his audience? And whatever the reason, what’s the point?

These have to be better than that recent effort from some video game which was pitiful (at least the short bit I listened to before I couldn’t take anymore).

I’ve commented here before about how I feel sorry for Paul. He’s got boatloads of money, had what appears to have been a storybook marriage, is universally recognized as part of the arguably greatest songwriting team in history, is likely one of the most recognized people in the world, and a large part of a group that truly did change the world. And yet he always comes across in interviews as uncomfortable/snarky and can’t seem shake the shadow of Lennon. Let it be, Paul, let it be.

I agree completely. It is ludicrous to express pity for Paul McCartney, and yet…You might suppose that someone who has been in the public eye for more than a half century would be more savvy and realize that he looks foolish and sad.

  3. There are so many projects McCartney could be doing to tidy up his legacy. If I were his manager I’d work to put together at least one of the following legacy-tidying projects:

Band on the Run Devil Run: Mixing the best bits of Band on the Run and his roots album, Run Devil Run, Paul, his non-musician wife, and Devil collaborator David Gilmour haul off to a remote, slightly dangerous location and crank out a quirky pop album.
My Aim Isn’t What It Used to Be: The aborted album with Elvis Costello that only resulted in a few songs in the early ’90s gets new legs. Joining in on the fun are Andy Partridge and – why not? – Sting.
In Search of…Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder’s Final Great Song: Returning to the scene of the crime, the artists’ joint Jump the Shark moment, Paul and Stevie hole up in a studio for 3 months in effort to write and record a single great song, something the world never thought either one of them would be capable of doing ever again. All references to God, the Beatles, racial harmony, nature, dogs, Duke Ellington, and even Paul’s most distant relatives are barred from entry into the studio. Paul and Stevie must play any instruments that appear on the record. No cutesy accompanying video will result.

Nicely done! But let’s not overlook the synergy of Guns ‘n’ Red Rose Speedway for Me, the eagerly anticipated Celtic-metal-pop collaboration of Macca with Axel Rose and Shane MacGowan.

  5. Hey, that poll question has been up there forever and I haven’t voted because I’m waiting for the answer that I want to be added:

I need to prove I’m cool by complaining that I can’t specifically vote for “Boz Scaggs era Steve Miller Band.”

  6. For some reason my ability to change the poll has disappeared. This is on a list of tune-ups that are BADLY needed. I’ve put in a request to The Back Office and will continue to follow up. Thanks.

If you know one thing about Sleater-Kinney it’s that it’s three women, but if you know another thing it’s that it’s always two guitars, drums, and no bass. But did you know that even a two guitars/drums trio needs an Oliver after a certain point? Here they are on Letterman last week:

Has there ever been a female Oliver (Olivera?) before? At least she’s not playing bass, at least on this song.

Would Patti Scialfa qualify as an “Olivera”? She was an add-on to the E-Street Band.

  9. Was that a Lene Lovich deep track?

  10. Excellent question! Sarah Lee has been a gun for hire. Has she played anything but bass, though? An Oliver/a must be versatile, right?

  11. BigSteve

The definition says the Oliver has to be a multi-instrumentalist. Patty Scialfa at least plays acoustic guitar AND tambourine, but Sara Lee plays only bass. And I think both of them got their photos taken with their bands, so therefore they do not qualify as Oliverae.

I think you are describing Lisa Germano.

  13. More Macca –

‘Lady Gaga posted …on Instagram. “Had a beautiful session with Sir Paul McCartney and friends,” Gaga wrote on Instagram, alongside a photo of herself, Macca and a room full of musicians – including none other than Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready, on Gaga’s right. “Working on one of his many secret projects! Killer musicians, vibe, and lots of laughs.” Next to a picture with McCartney, she wrote: “Always a good time with my buddy. I’ll never forget when he called me last year to work and I hung up the phone cuz I thought it was a prank!” ‘
