You know, I’m just kinda puzzled. I just finished listening to an EP I had to review for work, of a DC band called the Dawn of Man. It’s not a bad record, really, but…it’s a startlingly accurate recreation of a certain brief period of American new wave, when a lot of AOR muso types put on the skinny ties. As I say, not really a bad record, but I’m sitting here thinking, “WHY would anyone go to so much trouble to Rutles-ize the first couple of Missing Persons albums?”

And on another point, how come no great hipster revival of Lou Christie? Homeboy was making some absolutely fucking CRACKED records for a few years there. Devendra Banhart wishes he could make a record as effortlessly weird as “Cryin’ in the Streets,” which features a female backing chorus, one member of which seems to be doing a dedicated impression of her cat puking up a hairball.

Lou Christie
There should be a thread on the worst rock managers in history. I think Polley is right up there (he managed Lou Christie as well, who’s mentioned quite a few times in my BF biog). I just finished my book and it was really emotional. I’ll have to check out Cryin In the Streets – although that hairball part sounds scary.

Good points, Great One. I think I read that this band The Kings had been a struggling prog-rock band that decided to cut out the fat, much like a question we kicked around here some weeks ago. There’s a rock history book waiting to be written on struggling bands that finally prospered when they kicked their initial pursuits and went with the latest trend. We could start gathering stories here.
XTC and The Stranglers gave up on their mid-70s glam and biker rock fixations, respectively, cut haircuts, and joined the New Wave…

Lou Christie’s “Lightening Strikes” will be on the dual solo album of covers that A-Dogg and I have long discussed recording and releasing. I keep meaning to pick up a collection of his stuff. The 3 other songs I’ve heard of Christie are all cool.

Townsman Hrrundi,
How’s that AI British Invasion edition piece coming along? Even a simple response to my intial question will suffice. Thanks.
Absolutely hilarious video of Van Halen playing out of tune:

That’s awesome, dr john. I love how DLR’s baton twirling gets a bigger hand then EVH’s guitar solo.
