Outside of the game, now. I’m a huge fan of the American sitcom 30 Rock. If you are as big a fan of the show as me, you might know they had a running gag about the character Pete Hornberger being a member of Loverboy. They had a clip of the Working for the Weekend video with Pete superimposed in the band. I can’t see Loverboy now without looking for and being disappointed at not seeing Hornberger in there.
Funny you should say that, CF. I or one can’t un-see former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum in the face of Loverboy lead singer guy. And big LOL ups for “bandana-riffic.”
cdm, I used to share the rent with a guy who was the third-string pop music reporter for The Washington Post. He got handed all the shows that reporters one and two didn’t want. So I got to see Stryper, Poison, 90s Ted Nugent, DLR, make-up-less KISS (featuring a bass solo that ended with a rocket shooting out of Gene’s bass neck, up, up into the rafters, where it “blew up” a speaker cabinet!), and a bunch of other truly crappy acts. Stryper was very much the crappiest, I think. Lots of tight spandex crotch thrusting for Jesus.
I can kind of see what they were trying to do there, but overall wish they hadn’t. Forever ago, I used to watch MTV, my guess is they would have loved it.
I saw Loverboy. I saw them on that tour with ZZ Top in 81. I had second row dead center seats. In front of me were like 5 guys that looked like they could be in ZZ Top, with long beards and cowboy hats. The front row was right against the stage and whenever Loverboy finished a song they got everyone up front yelling, “You suck! You suck!” People were loud enough that it sounded to me like the mike’s picked it up and you could hear it everywhere. They were awful. ZZ Top were great, though.
I would have sworn I’d never heard this song, but listening to it now for the first time in (sweet fancy Moses) 38 or so years, I guess I heard it at least a dozen times.
I always hope at least a few members of bands like these were really prudent with this finances at the time, rather than anticipating the good times would last forever, rather than a few years.
2k Man, that’s the same tour as me but I saw the show in Wheeling WV. I don’t recall people yelling at them but I definitely remember the singer trying to pit the right side of the crowd against the left side of the crowd in a “who can cheer louder” contest. Apathy won the day.
ZZ Top was excellent and had a classic 70s style laser show. Mercifully, the lasers did not appear to startle any of the many heads of cattle that were onstage at the time.

The chick behind the “computer console” won her role in the video through a contest on MTV. That’s how big they were at that particular moment. Also, the video for “Notorious” was directed by one David Fincher, who went on to some notoriety of his own. Go figure.
