Nope. The primary flaw of iTunes has at long last been fixed: it now allows you to designate your own sort order instead of accepting the one they forced upon you.
I think Fox2 out of Detroit is broadcasting bits and pieces of the Metro Times Blowout in Detroit if anyone is interested! I have a few friends playing the fest:
“The primary flaw of iTunes has at long last been fixed: it now allows you to designate your own sort order instead of accepting the one they forced upon you.”
huh? if you’re on your library page, and you click on the word “name” (at the top of the column of song titles), it sorts your songs byy the alpha order of song titles. if you click on “artist”, “album”, “time”, “genre”, whatever ,it will do the same.
and if you’re making a playlist, you can click on a song and drag it into the sequence spot you want.
I hear you, Prof. Art. Mind you, I continue to believe that iTunes’ “shuffle” algorithm is not at all a properly random thing. My iPod seems to favor certain bands and albums over others — I hear Honeybus and the Wonder Stuff *all* the freaking time, for example, yet I only possess one album of each of these bands. In contrast, my iPod’s disdain for the Beatles — from whom I have ripped nearly their entire catalog — is deep; it rarely serves me any fare from the fab four. The Beatles are, of course, notorious for shunning the iTunes empire. Coincidence????
The best randomizer, I find, is putting the thing in “song” mode and just letting it play on an alphabetic rotation.
Whatever the peculiar shortcomings of the iTunes Way, it’s still better than Mr. Mod’s insistence on either carrying around a boombox on his shoulder, sitting in his car, or dragging around his LaRue-Tachi Mr. Mambo sound cart in order to enjoy his fave raves. Come on, folks, let’s face it: Mr. Mod, as much as we love him, has “problems,” and seriously needs a technology enema! What can we do to help? He needs healing!
but i don’t think great 48 was talking about shuffle…i could be wrong, but i thought he was just talking about different ways to sort songs.
but if shuffle is the issue, then you can either use shuffle or party shuffle (two different options that are what i assume great48 means by the phrase “the [order] they forced upon you”). i prefer party shuffle, because you can see the what’s coming up and if you don’t like it, you can hit refresh.
OR, you can make a playlist, where you have total control.
i just commented because i don’t understand the idea of having to be a slave to an order that iTunes forces on you. if you know how to use the damn thing, that doesn’t happen.
Well, dude, all I can say about your headphoneaphobia is too bad — I was just out walking the pooch when Hendrix’s “Foxey Lady” came over the ear buds. Had I not been listening in this fashion, I never would have caught all the weird shit that goes on in Jimi’s main vocal on that song. It’s definitely to be filed under “I can’t believe they released that!” in the Rock Gaffes and Flubs Section of the Archives. From the second verse through to the end of the song, Mr. Engineer didn’t bother to take out Jimi clearing his throat, sniffling and such. It’s a gas to listen to — but I guess *you’ll* never hear it.
Oh, wait, I guess you will now since I told you about it. Well, you’ll never experience the thrill of discovery, buster! That much I know!
Oy. I’m not talking about playlists, shuffling, or anything of the sort. (“Sort,” geddit?) I’m talking about ID tags.
In all editions of iTunes up to 7.1, it never allowed you to modify the sorting of the files’ ID tags. So if your artist tag said, say, “Nina Simone,” it would show up under the Ns in your iTunes folder. And if you, like me, considered that a sin against nature, you had to change the ID tags of the files to read “Simone, Nina,” which always bugged the crap out of me. But now you can apply a sort order to the tags themselves, and now Nina is there where she belongs, between Sonny Simmons and Simple Kid.
I’ve sort of gotten used to the sorting by artists’ first name by now. At least they skip a ‘The’ automatically, although that means you can’t search for Them without a workaround, because Itunes wants to skip the initial ‘The.’ What’s weird is having to remember that albums titles sort without skipping ‘The.’ Do you know how many album tiles begin with ‘The’?
i’ve been sorting by artist’s last name since i’ve had iTunes 4.0.
it’s too late for you, but just fyi you could have done do so with the following procedure:
select all tunes by an artist, click on “file”, then go to “get info” (then click yes, when it asks you if you’re sure you want to modify the info for more than one song), and in the field under “artist”, change it from “Nina Simone” to “Simone, Nina”.
Saturn, are you fundamentally misunderstanding me on some basic level, or are you just being a dick?

Right. That’s what I had been doing since 2002 when I got my first iPod. What I’ve been saying for days now is that in iTunes 7.1, YOU DON’T HAVE TO DO THAT ANYMORE. There is now a sort field, which is different from the artist field, so that if a tag reads “Nina Simone” in the artist field and “Simone, Nina” in the sort field, the file shows up under S, not N.
when you started this thread, you were complaining about having to to submit to the sort order that iTunes forces on you.
you said nothing that indicated you already knew the procedure i describe and which you’ve quoted above.
(your post above is the first time in this thread that you’ve indicated you know how to do this)
phrases posted above by you like “[iTunes] never allowed you to modify the sorting of the files’ ID tags” give no indication that you know anything about how to…ermmmm….modify thesorting of the files ID tags, let alone the specific procedure i describe above.
so pardon me if i thought i was explaining something you didn’t seem to know about.
besides, it takes about less than a minute to do what i’ve described above.
had i known you had been complaining about switching from a 45 second procedure to a 5 second procedure, i might’ve refrained from comment.
APPLY SORT FIELD, BITCHES!!!!!!!!!!
Thank god my deadlines are past. If you need me, I’m gonna be up all night fixing my iTunes Playlist so it’s like god and nature intended.
Huh? Are you talking about the snags on some posts at Little Hits? Good luck with that task.
Nope. The primary flaw of iTunes has at long last been fixed: it now allows you to designate your own sort order instead of accepting the one they forced upon you.
p.s. thanks for the special request – this video is jammin’ 🙂 ha ha
Funny;) Yeh, that’s how I felt using the agency computer today. Piece of crap computer. Good luck with the iTunes sorting…! Bah!
On another note, it looks like Eddie Van Halen is once again in rehab:

well – anyway, follow the fox 2 link to their music section
mr. mod – btw: i obviously have trouble posting actual links, it always gives me postdata errors whenever I try and use an a href= tag
I fixed your link. I can get in there and do that for folks, when necessary. There was some little bug in there, but I’m not exactly sure what it was.

it’s been this way since iTunes 4.
