Dave Edmunds and Rockpile go through the motions to suit the new business model.

  1. Great song;) Cool video. A good one for starting off my day! I like the fact that they’re grinning while checking eachother’s non-moves out. 🙂 Nick Lowe! Great hair! Great shirt on Edmunds too – I’m noticing more and more musicians come from Wales originally that are out there to love.

And Nick Lowe is playing the dreaded 8-stringed bass! Judas!

Have you been following the poll this weekend? Of the handful of folks brave enough to make a choice, I’m shocked that Rick Wakeman is catching up to Ray Manzarek.

To those of you who only hit the cop-out “show me the results” answer, are you happy with what you’re finding?

  4. saturnismine

not only am i man enough to choose, i’m man enough to reveal my choice: i chose wakeman.

manzarek’s playing is as annoying as his personality. thank GOD for the fact that Aminor and Cmajor are just about ANY of the white keys. he made an entire career out of it.

and i LOVE the doors, but not as much as wakeman’s contributions to “heart of the sunrise” or all of “close to the edge”. and although manzarek may never have played on anything quite so pompous as “tales from topographic oceans”, he’s never played on anything as cool as “hunky dory” either.

  5. Wakeman all the way baybee. Ray can suck it!

  6. Mr. Moderator

I’m glad to see the Wakeman supporters come forward. Your rationale, Art, is a fine one.

  7. I too went with Wakeman. He’s not going to lecture me about Jon Anderson’s poetry!

(And I totally forgot about Hunky Dory. Good call, saturn!)

  8. and although manzarek may never have played on anything quite so pompous as “tales from topographic oceans”, he’s never played on anything as cool as “hunky dory” either.

Amen brother. It’s Wakeman for me, too, though I have no problem with Manzarek’s playing, either. I forgot that he played on Hunky Dory, though I always think of Lou Reed’s 1st solo album and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, so he’s ok with me as far as his playing with others goes.

The unlikelihood of Wakeman ever using the word ‘shaman’ does give him the edge.

I find it hard to believe the skewed polls are caused by people wanting to see the results. There’s a ‘view results’ button right there after all. Are we sure it’s not some kind of spybot or something?

I think you actually have to make a selection for the View Results button to work. I don’t know if robots can vote; I think there are simply a lot of wusses and vote counters out there. For shame!

I’ll give Wakeman props for Hunky Dory , but as for his work in Yes…I don’t know. For me, he’s the only guy in the band who almost never plays a part in a song that I look forward to hearing. All the other guys in Yes play a key part that makes the song, at least, funny if not good. Wakeman’s just some meaningless coloring.

Manzarek carries a number of The Doors’ songs. What would they be without him? They would not be The Doors, that’s for sure, but you shouldn’t hold that against him.

No, I view the results all the time without having voted.

No, I view the results all the time without having voted.

Really! That’s news to me. So maybe the lobsided victory by Lazarus from Black Snake Moan was justified.

Can you buy this version of the song? Is someone going to throw a rotten tomato at me if I say I like this version loads better?

  14. Mr. Moderator

You mean this version of “Girls Talk”? THis is THE version; Elvis wrote it, but Dave Edmunds’ version came out as a single a year or more before EC released his B-side version. I think all would agree that Edmunds gave the world the definitive version. I’m pretty sure this Edmunds album – Repeat When Necessary was recorded at the same sessions as Nick Lowe’s Labour of Lust. Had Rockpile simply recorded as a band at this point and released one album with the best tracks from each, they might have released one of the 5 finest albums in the history of the genre. Hyperbole? Maybe only slightly.

  15. sammymaudlin

Did not know that. I’ve only known it from Get Happy. I’ve been Dave-averse due to his 50s fascination and it is those 50s-ish tunes on the Rockpile album that don’t sit as well. Given that, should I dip a toe into Repeat When Necessary? Or should I just put on a Big Bopper album or something?

  16. Mr. Moderator

You’ve gotta tread lightly with Edmunds. I really like Repeat When Necessary and Tracks on Wax 4, but they’re best listened to with one hand near the tone arm, ready to lift the needle over some of the Chuck Berry covers and Chuck Berry-like covers that seem like filler. I’ve got a half dozen of his albums. I’ll try to put together a sampler for you, cutting out a lot of the stuff that likely won’t interest you. THe problem with the guy is he’s not much of a songwriter, and his vocals are one dimensional.

  17. Can I get in on the Dave Edmunds sampler too?

  18. Mr. Moderator

Yes, Sally. I’ll try to get started on it this weekend.
