I just stumbled across this 1980 clip of a song called “Better,” by a once-popular Phoenix, AZ band, Blue Shoes. Was this band 30 years ahead of its time? I propose hipsters The Fiery Furnaces cover this song and re-create this video shot for shot.

(You’re welcome.)

Mm, not so sure about that, but not bad. Skinny ties: that might catch on.

  2. To be clear, I can’t stand skinny ties, but I’m thinking about the kids and how Fiery Furnaces, a current band I really do like, might give themselves a commercial shot in the arm. If they accept my idea, by the way, I want to be part of the crowd. I’ll grow a time-appropriate bushy mustache.

These guys played one of our highschool dances. I didn’t go.

    Dear Sirs.

Re: skinny ties. I feel your statement is quite broad and frankly insulting. I have a dozen or more skinny ties all bought via thrift stores and all authentic and vintage from the late 50s-early 60s. They are the only ties I will wear. I look absolutely stunning in them and because of their fine craftsmansip and obvious mid-century design they are rarely if ever mistaken for the skinny ties of which you refer. I look forward to your retraction/clarification.

  4. Would it have been better if I’d called them “thin ties?” Sorry, man, you’re welcome to dig your skinny ties. Some of my best friends dig skinny ties, but I like ’em wide with big-ass knots shoving up through the collar points.

    They did? What year?

Wait. The keyboardist does look suspiciously like my high school French teacher. Or Lorene Yarnell.

    Dig that plexi-glass bass guitar!

And yes, the singer does share some striking similiarities to the Fiery Furnaces singer. But I must point out that the Fiery Furnaces hardly typify as hipsters. They are too well established now in the musik industry to deserve that tag. I think there may be an expiration date on hipsterdom.

    Great find!

  8. Good point, jeangray – and a true comment on just how UNhip I am.
