Did anyone go to the Sloan show last night at world cafe? I forget who on this list likes Sloan and who doesn’t. AndyR? They were good, but not as good as they usually have been. I don’t know if it was the cuts from the old albums that were slowing them down a bit, if the crowd just wasn’t into it because of the rain, or if it was just a “the beginning” of the tour show where they were trying out a new set. Drummer Andrew Scott was pretty lively and shined as a front-man though. I missed my friend Thom’s band (Small Sins) for the 2nd time because I was still at work and got to the show late. Grr.
I did not go but am a somewhat newer fan. This is one of those bands that has been around for a long time but took me years to notice. (GBV is another…Pavement another – thanks Sally!)
Okay, hands up if anyone wants a Sloan favourites comp with some Puomons tracks (produced by Chris Murphy). Dean, I have two CDs to send to you also that have been burning a hole in my desk for some time now anyway –
I didn’t even know they were playing. I really like One Chord… – sounds like a good homemade album some friends might make. The previous album is good too. From Navy Blues on there’s a sharp drop-off for me. They start sounding too much like The Raspberries and other ’70s wannabe rock stars (ie, Wings w/out McCartney). I usually get turned off by bands making music that’s fueled by the fantasy of playing some enormodome circa 1976. Anyhow, I did see them about 8 or 9 years ago at the Khyber, and they were pretty good, especially when the bass player – the main culprit, I determined, in the pseudo Pop Star approach – wasn’t singing lead. The 4 or 5 songs the drummer stepped forward to sing and play electic piano on were the best.
I do like their latest album much more than anything since Navy Blues.
Twice Removed is a great album, I think on that album there was a kind of a backlash on Sloan around that time for all of the press that they got for Underwhelmed. And then on One Chord, it was back because One Chord had “the hit” (Good in Everyone) and wasn’t as meaningful as “Twice Removed”;) Although One Chord has good songs, I would say that TR has more great songs. I guess Chris Murphy is the one with the 70s rock touch. Chris has always seemed to be the one behind the arena rock feel of the band (“enormodome circa 1976”), and Jay has the soft-touch with the 70s power pop numbers and ballads. I dig Patrick’s songs too, but to me Chris’ stuff stands out more. Andrew is the most play-it-cool partner in that group and has continuously come to the fore with rockin’ numbers as well, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen him as such a front-man forerunner until he was on stage the other night during I Can’t Sleep/Blackout- totally blew my mind. He was a serious contender to be sure, and if the band split, I’d go see his new band in a second. Anyway, I really do like this album, but it’s just too long and a bit all over the place for me. I’m amused that they did the track HFXNSHC (Halifax Nova Scotia Hardcore);)
