The day after the Oscars is probably the third-best day to hold this special edition of Dugout Chatter! You know the drill: please provide your gut answers to the following questions. There ain’t no good guy, there ain’t no bad guy…

What’s the best use of a rock song in a non–rock themed movie?

If Stanley Kubrick had filmed a rock video, what song should he have filmed?

What rock artist or band is most deserving of a future rock biopic?

What’s the most egregious rock ‘n roll detail inaccuracy you recall on film?

What’s the Jaws of the music business?

Of existing rock biopics, what overlooked aspect of the artist’s life do you most wish had been covered?

I look forward to your responses.

What rock artist or band is most deserving of a future rock biopic?

    More to come….

What’s the best use of a rock song in a non–rock themed movie?

Play With Fire in Annie Hall. For some reason, I just like that scene.

If Stanley Kubrick had filmed a rock video, what song should he have filmed?

    Eyes Without a Face

What rock artist or band is most deserving of a future rock biopic?

    The Flamin Groovies

What’s the most egregious rock ‘n roll detail inaccuracy you recall on film?

It’s always Stones tour dates. They never even released albums in the years movie people went to see them.

What’s the Jaws of the music business?

Achtung Baby. Everybody else seems to love it, but I just don’t get it.

Of existing rock biopics, what overlooked aspect of the artist’s life do you most wish had been covered?

Aren’t they all just so much fluff?

I say: Now THAT’s funny! (But would he have featured the chicks slappin’ their own butt cheeks?)

What’s the best use of a rock song in a non–rock themed movie?

Making Time by the Creation in Rushmore.

If Stanley Kubrick had filmed a rock video, what song should he have filmed?

I’m thinking about cannibalism, slaughterhouses, and eating competitions for Yummy Yummy Yummy.

What rock artist or band is most deserving of a future rock biopic? I probably haven’t cared to see enough of these to know who’s been left out, how about Alex Chilton?

What’s the most egregious rock ‘n roll detail inaccuracy you recall on film?

All I can think of is where in We Jam Econo, there’s footage of D. Boon talking about how REM went to bat for them against their label to get the Minutemen to open for them on a tour, and he kept saying Snipe instead Stipe.

What’s the Jaws of the music business?

I have no idea what this means. A huge band/artist that eats everything in their path, has a few human meals and blows up at the end? Led Zeppelin?

Of existing rock biopics, what overlooked aspect of the artist’s life do you most wish had been covered?

There should be a list of people they screwed over along the way, to balance these things out, since they are usually hagiographies.

What’s the best use of a rock song in a non–rock themed movie?
“Tell Me You’re Comin Back To Me” by The Stones in Mean Streets.

If Stanley Kubrick had filmed a rock video, what song should he have filmed?
    “Dogs” or “Pigs” by Floyd.

What rock artist or band is most deserving of a future rock biopic?
God I hate those. none. nobody. stop doing them.

What’s the most egregious rock ‘n roll detail inaccuracy you recall on film?
That whole “Rockhead” scene in Sid N Nancy. Who was that supposed to be? Johnny Thunders? if so, he Sure as shit DID do drugs.

What’s the Jaws of the music business?
    Backbeat?

Of existing rock biopics, what overlooked aspect of the artist’s life do you most wish had been covered?
I thought Garry Busey should have done a more in elaborate plane crash scene with no helmet.

  6. What’s the best use of a rock song in a non–rock themed movie?
“Be My Baby” in Mean Streets. That film really is the template for this kind of thing.

If Stanley Kubrick had filmed a rock video, what song should he have filmed?
Well “The Universal” by Blur already looks like Clockwork Orange.

What rock artist or band is most deserving of a future rock biopic?
Not really rock, but Judee Sill.

What’s the most egregious rock ‘n roll detail inaccuracy you recall on film?
I think Rockhead in Sid and Nancy is supposed to be Iggy Pop. You’re right kilroy, it’s terrible. So is the dude playing Lydon.

What’s the Jaws of the music business?
    Dark Side of the Moon

  7. What’s the best use of a rock song in a non–rock themed movie?

    “The End” in Apocalypse Now.

If Stanley Kubrick had filmed a rock video, what song should he have filmed?

“My Ding A Ling” by Chuck Berry

What rock artist or band is most deserving of a future rock biopic?

    Tommy James and the Shondells

What’s the most egregious rock ‘n roll detail inaccuracy you recall on film?

In the Ray Charles film, there is scene that is supposed to take place in Houston. Meanwhile, you can clearly see the Mississippi River in the background. Couldn’t they have just framed the shot a little differently.

I was also bothered that the Johnny Cash film seemed to imply that Elvis was involved with Johnny turning to pills. Most people will state that Elvis didn’t really start taking those things until after he was in the army.

What’s the Jaws of the music business?

Easy. Frampton Comes Alive. Or is it the Rocky?

Of existing rock biopics, what overlooked aspect of the artist’s life do you most wish had been covered?

The murder of Jimi Hendrix! I really don’t know…

    TB

Tommy James is revving up a lecture tour thing – he’s got a new book out called something like “Music, the mob and me” and I believe he’s hoping it could be a movie. It could work – he’s got some funny, and crazy stories.

  9. Good call on Judee Sill biopic — what a tragic life. I guess the happy ending would be the re-release of her music in the mid-2000s and a tribute album in 2009.

  10. misterioso

Making Time in Rushmore–a killer moment, indeed. Good call.

Q: What’s the best use of a rock song in a non–rock themed movie?

A: Dazed and Confused in general makes brilliant use of music, but in particular Sweet Emotion over the opening, Hurricane in the pool hall scene, and Tuesday’s Gone at the end of the kegger.

Q: If Stanley Kubrick had filmed a rock video, what song should he have filmed?

A: Down in the Tube Station at Midnight

Q: What rock artist or band is most deserving of a future rock biopic?

A: I say, let there be no more rock biopics.

Q: What’s the most egregious rock ‘n roll detail inaccuracy you recall on film?

A: Gary Cooper swinging the bat the wrong way in Pride of the Yankees. No, wait, that’s the most egregious inaccuracy in a sports film.

Q: What’s the Jaws of the music business?

A: If the subtext is “The thing that shift the music business towards seeking the next blockbuster rather than allegedly cultivating talent, then maybe Frampton Comes Alive is a good example or else Saturday Night Fever or Rumours. Or, ultimately, Thriller is probably the Great White Shark of the industry. So to speak.

Q: Of existing rock biopics, what overlooked aspect of the artist’s life do you most wish had been covered?

A: I don’t know. I really, really avoid them altogether.

  12. 1. Best use of song: My 1st thought was The Pixies “Where is My Mind?” at the end of Fight Club.
    2. Kubrick should do something long with lots of tonal shifts. How about “Supper’s Ready”, Mr Mod?
    3. I love to see Nick Cage or Johnny Depp go far, far out as Morrissey in a Smiths biopic.
    4. Rock Movie inaccuracy: I got nothin’.
    5. Jaws of the music biz. I agree with Misterioso’s explanation of the topic so I’d say Licensed to Ill or the Run DMC / Aerosmith “Walk This Way”. Proved white kids would listen to rap so the industry focused on rap and current R&B styles.
    6. What did a famous guy like Elvis deal with the Army? What did Jim Morrison ever learn in film school?

On the topic of the Oscars, was anyone else nearly offended when they asked “What’s your favorite movie song?” and no one mentioned “A Hard Day’s Night”?

  13. Funny, k., the Kubrick-directed song I have in mind is long, but it doesn’t have quite so many tonal shifts.

I missed that Oscars question. What crap did people say, stuff like “Grease Is the Word”?

  14. I recall lots of Disney-type numbers.

  15. mockcarr

K, I was thinking the SAME THING about that movie song question. Randy Newman’s comment about finding a fifth song to nominate was good, but you really have to wonder if there was one.

  16. I’ll play.

What’s the best use of a rock song in a non–rock themed movie?

“Gimme Shelter” in Goodfellas is hard to beat. That is the first one that came to mind for me.

If Stanley Kubrick had filmed a rock video, what song should he have filmed?

    Television’s “Marquee Moon”

What rock artist or band is most deserving of a future rock biopic?

I challenge someone to make a rock biopic (a dreaded genre, if ever there was one) on the making of Pet Sounds, focusing on Brian Wilson and his studio musicians and cowriters. For the most part, screw his bandmates, who were touring through most of the recording sessions; screw the backstory of mean, old Pops; screw the stinking Smile myth. Somehow find an artful way to tell the story of the WORK that went into that album while Brian was at least teetering toward his psychological decline. Let that part be felt more than overblown.

What’s the most egregious rock ‘n roll detail inaccuracy you recall on film?

I wish I could remember what I was watching recently, but someone was singing into the backside of a microphone.

What’s the Jaws of the music business?

I meant the first “summer blockbuster” album that forever changed the music industry. Thriller is a little later in this progression; maybe Fleetwood Mac’s big album, the second one with Nicks and Buckingham.

Of existing rock biopics, what overlooked aspect of the artist’s life do you most wish had been covered?

How much cooler McCartney actually was than Lennon:P

  17. bostonhistorian

I’ve always thought Bobby Fuller’s story would make an excellent movie, what with his unsolved murder and all.
