Another Mystery Date…so soon? Yes, it ties into tomorrow night’s pre-sausagefest episode of Saturday Night Shut-In.
Let’s review the ground rules here. The Mystery Date song is not necessarily something I believe to be good. So feel free to rip it or praise it. Rather the song is something of interest due to the artist, influences, time period… Your job is to decipher as much as you can about the artist without research. Who do you think it is? Or, Who do you think it sounds like? When do you think it was recorded? Etc…
If you know who it is, don’t spoil it for the rest. Anyone who knows it can play the “mockcarr option.” (And I’ve got a hunch at least one of you know this one.) This option is for those of you who just can’t hold your tongue and must let everyone know just how in-the-know you are by calling it. So if you know who it is and want everyone else to know that you know, email Mr. Moderator at mrmoderator [at] rocktownhall [dot] com
. If correct we will post how brilliant you are in the Comments section.
The real test of strength though is to guess as close as possible without knowing. Ready, steady, go!

OK, I was just about to post what I thought it sounded like and then realized it actually *was* the band I was going to compare it to. Yow.
Thanks for withholding your Rock Expertise, pudman13! You will receive the requisite Rock Nerd Points at the conclusion of this Mystery Date.
Clearly recorded the weekend that Marc Bolan chloroformed Rod Stewart and kidnapped the Faces.
I have no idea what this is, but it sounds like a blend of the Faces and early Aerosmith. I would guess this comes from 1972-1974 by the sound.
You guys are hearing this as I did. tonyola, the record is from the period you’ve guessed.
It sounds like Dr. John trying to impersonate Marc Bolan and then like Marc Bolan trying to impersonate Dr. John. 1974?
My first guess of Jack White playing with Marc Bolan is clearly not correct. So second guess: Slade?
Nope, not Slade. The great thing about this Mystery Date is that it’s loaded with nerdy backstory stuff that only people like us would care about.
The overly lascivious lyrics remind me of those old Queen numbers where he’s go overboard to sound not-gay. Since I can pretty much eliminate the Sensational Alex Harvey Band, how about some deep track by Gary Glitter?
Budgie with Marc Bolan singing?
No, but I’m pretty sure there’s a Six Degrees of Separation between the singer and Bolan.
No, but an interesting characterization and guess!
Could there be a Jeff Lynn/ELO connection?
Not that I’m aware of, but connections abound beyond the time this band spent together.
As revealed on yesterday’s Saturday Night Shut-In, our Mystery Date was Silverhead, featuring Michael Des Barres on lead vocals, Nigel Harrison (Blondie) on bass, and Robbie Blunt (collaborator on Robert Plant’s first solo albums) on guitar.
