I actually met Bob Crane in 1970. He was hosting a local telethon in Central Florida and I was 14 and playing sax in a youth big-band-jazz combo that appeared on the show at 6:30 AM Sunday Morning. Crane didn’t come across as a “star” – he was quite friendly toward us and even sat in on the drums during one song. Interesting how such a seemingly nice and down-to-earth guy ended up having such serious kink.

  2. That’s very cool, tonyola. I’ve been watching a lot of Hogan’s Heroes for the last year, appreciating just how good that guy was in that role.

As for your last statement, isn’t that what folks from the outside world say about us when they find we’re spending an inordinate amount of hours chatting here?

  3. You’re not filming us at it, are you?

  4. Ah, the always chatty Richard Lloyd strikes! The interviews with the present-day Television (linked from the piece you linked) were pretty good. I don’t think I’d ever seen Verlaine interviewed before. He seemed much friendlier and tuned in than I would have imagined. Poor Richard.

Yeah I agree. I never would have thought Verlaine would come off as a normal guy, but he does.

Btw in the interview they brush off the question about Just Kids, Patti Smith’s book about her and Robert Mapplethorpe. I haven’t been a big fan of Patti’s recent work, so I hadn’t really considered reading it. A friend of mine recommended it, and it turned out to be really great, beautifully written. I’m no longer surprised that it won the National Book Award. Just don’t read the ending in a public place like I did, because you won’t want people to see you cry.

  6. I agree that was a beautiful book, maybe the best thing she’s ever done. I went as far as tearing up when she was interviewed on Fresh Air at the time of the book’s release. She started talking about Joe Strummer and what he meant to her and it killed me.

  7. I just got choked up reading your comment.

  8. Any of you ever pull your groin? If not, trust me: DON’T! If so, any advice on healing that area would be appreciated. It’s not an area I think I should rub with Ben-Gay.

  9. misterioso

That’s rough, Mod. My advice is lay off the break dancing.

Note that no answer was forthcoming.

Question for the orockale: Was there an English language version of Plastic Bertrand’s “Jaques Cousteau?” I swear I heard one years ago, with the lyric “is he a man or is he a fish” but I can’t find it. Did I imagine this?

  12. BigSteve

Yeah it’s a weird injury. The first time it happened to me I was like “Oh THAT’S what they’re talking about!” That whole area is very complex.

  13. Mod: Rest, Ice (yes, ice) in the first 48 hours (& after activity)..and anti-inflammatory medications (Ibuprofen, Motrin, Aleve) to start. Later, heat (like a heat pack-type thing) before stretching…gently! The pain should be your guide as to how much activity or stretching you should try to take on.

  14. Interesting piece I picked up from the “feed” of a friend whose presence used to be cherished around here:

  15. “Jet Boy, Jet Girl” by Elton Motello. Same exact backing track, different lead vocal. I actually think the Motello song might’ve come first.

  16. misterioso

Interesting. I thought “Jet Boy, Jet Girl” was the same as “Ça plane pour moi.” I don’t think I know the Jacques Cousteau song.

  17. cherguevara

misterioso is correct, that’s not the Jacques Cousteau song. But impressive knowledge nonetheless.

  18. Interesting — I used to do what Dylan seems to be doing — although I was drawing pictures of Reggie Jackson out of Sports Illustrated.

  19. And a buddy of mine did an excellent copy of Steve Windwood’s first solo album cover! His was way better than mine.

  20. My apologies. I wasn’t reading closely enough and thought we were talking about “Ca Plane Pour Moi.” I will take a RTH time-out in the corner for a bit.

  21. COMMENT OF THE MONTH contender!

  22. As crazy as Richard came off in his RTH interview and recent appearances, I gotta say his comments have the ring of truth.

  23. One down & one to go!

I was 9 years old and a big Phillies fan in 1964. Finally, after 47 years, that gold standard of collapse can now be replaced by the 2011 Red Sox.

Now, if only some team could win fewer than 9 games in an NBA season…

  24. Oh come on, the 1973 Sixers’ record needs to stand!

  25. mockcarr

Well, at least the record for most losses by a franchise, currently held by the Phillies, seems safe.
