Man, that’s a really unfortunate look Joe & his band had going at that time…including their choice of instruments. Wilko wins “least embarrassing look” in that clip…by a mile.
I have not seen this clip before…it’s great.
Wilko, despite his onstage aggression, is a cultured man who studied literature at university for 3 years. One evening, after setting up Dr Feelgood’s gear, Wilko, my wife & I went out together to park the tour bus. Unfortunately in the narrow back streets at rush hour we hit and dented a car.
Now Birmingham is the UK’s Motor City. Men love their motors more than they do their children. A very angry driver, intent on revenge, came towards the bus. We jumped out to meet him & Wilko produced the full on 1,000 yard stare, the only time I saw him do this offstage.
“Road Rage Man” immediately knew that he was out of his depth here, he had stepped into some bad craziness. Wilko gave him a few pounds for his trouble, patted him on the head & sent him on his way. When Mr Johnson turned to smile at my wife & I we were pretty much holding each other up to stop ourselves falling over with laughter.
Wilco is awesome. Love his stage presence and his guitar style, but 9 minutes of him scratching his nutsack would be more interesting than that clip. That’s a really boring clip after about 2 minutes. I’m missing the appeal of this 80s big hair blooz.
I found it more a test of endurance than appeal. I like the way Wilco keeps testing the limits of his curly guitar chord, trying to break through fellow guitarist David Grissom’s fortress of hair and stupid-ass finger-tapping. Finally, toward the end, Wilco breaks through and gets some interplay with Grissom. What at first seems like an act of aggression ultimately has a peaceful purpose.
Wow, I just noticed the Mad for Mod cocktail party ad, but now it’s gone. I’m sure it will come back. Mr. Moderator apparently really knows how to throw a party!
Damn! That Trans-Europe Express album cover thingie popped up alongside the banner, and I swear, Grizzly Bear are Kraftwerk reincarnated!

Not sure if it’s been mentioned yet, but R.I.P., Cleotha Staples: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/24/arts/music/cleotha-staples-of-the-staple-singers-dies-at-78.html?_r=0
Also shuffling off this mortal coil, blues singer/guitarist, Magic Slim: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/23/arts/music/magic-slim-blazing-chicago-bluesman-dies-at-75.html?ref=obituaries

I had not heard about either of those deaths. Thanks for passing along that unfortunate news.
I’m not sure what the “right” color would be for a Paul Reed Smith guitar, but that ain’t it.

Good point. The curly guitar chord is the 2nd most interesting person on stage.
Some cool, budget-priced vinyl reissues from Numero Group.
