This actually sounds cool, Al. I was just thinking about Big Star last night and why they might be treasured over so many other power pop bands. To me the difference is their injection of Southern pop-soul sensibilities. Chilton sang differently than all the McCartneybees who were his contemporaries and who have followed. He also put some Southern-style guitar licks in the songs rather than 90-angle power chords and big rock licks. The outtakes and rarities I’ve heard by Big Star are usually interesting. I’m not a fan of that Chris Bell album, however. It’s not terrible, but to me it’s one more airtight power pop album.
Anyone think a Big Star box could be of value?
