We’re heading out to see three tribute bands tonight: Planet Earth (Duran Duran), Temptation (New Order) and Strangelove (Depeche Mode). While my favorite tribute band has been Luvn Rockets (complete with Mod-worthy wigs and some excellent sunglasses), I have to admit that I’ve been a bit more open to the siren call of these cover/rip off bands. A friend of ours plays in Temptation, and we know him as a fine musician who was also eager to figure out how N.O. made their sound. Fast forward after a year or so of dabbling, and Mr. Royale and I have decided that they have out-Hook’d Hook. Who would have thought New Order could be so much fun to watch (live, N.O. sounded good but were pretty boring to watch). So now, I’m eager to see how Duran Duran is done. Will Simon be the Michelin Man-era fatty or the svelte 80’s crush worthy singer. Not that I’m a huge DD fan, but at the minimum it will be entertaining. We’ve seen Strangelove a few times, and while we tend to only stick around for a few songs, they certainly have their Dave Gahan and Martin Gore down.
This is indeed cringeworthy, right down to the inexplicable presence of the frogs on a platter.
