Look at the love for Give ’em Enough Rope in the poll! That album does get a bad rap.

I don’t get it, Give Em Enough Rope has always been my favorite Clash lp. What’s there not to like?
I’ve heard misproduced thrown around, but I’m not hearing it.
now Combat Rock, there’s an album that a case needs to be made for.
First off, thanks Mr. Mod for your kind comments re: my last post. I’m starting to feel like the Jacoby Ellsbury of this site.
I’m still trawling through the back pages & I want to second Oats’ disappointment, which he recorded in the May ’07 thread on when you were bummed out on your favorite band, when the Kinks’ Phobia was released. I feel that there were 4 good songs on the album, including “Scattered”, but it was generally a bloated mess. It would have been a much better album if they combined the decent tracks w/some of the tracks from the Did Ya EP. Also, the cover art left much to be desired. Despite all that, I have never bailed on the Kinks as I have acts such as Elvis Costello, Graham Parker & Robyn Hitchcock. Finally, the whole Soap Opera Live at the Beacon Theater film is now available on YouTube.
You may be our great new hope, Diskojoe, but may your second year on RTH more like Pedroia’s!
Time for some links!
The new Bynre/Eno thing is streaming at http://www.everythingthathappens.com/ts/
My initial reaction: MEH!
Much better is the Damon Albarn opera thing, which is kinda blowing my mind. Streaming at phawker.com.
Finally, I don’t know if anyone here is familiar with Matthew Perpetua, proprietor of the Fluxblog.org blog, but he handily sums up my Hold Steady hatred here : http://perpetua.tumblr.com/post/46398735/apples-vs-dim-witted-no-talent-hacks
(Although I don’t love Radiohead quite as much.)
Brian Wilson’s new album That Lucky Old Sun is streaming here: http://theadvertiser.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/00/99999999/BRIANWILSON/80814001
Re: Wilson’s album — I kind of liked what I heard. In other good news, you know you’ve completed your comeback when the idiotic UK music press starts saying you’re boring:

I have really enjoyed my first listens to Wilson’s album. The gate fold is a little flimsy, but the artwork is pretty nice and cheery.
I like it way better then “Gettin’ in Over My Head.” The songs remind me more of “Imagination.” A lot of reminiscing and hope, Very similar themes.
I think Wilson has found a good writing partner in Scott Bennett. The lyrics can be pretty clever:
“At 25 I turned out the light
Cause I couldn’t handle the glare in my tired eyes
But now I’m back, drawing shades of kind blue skies”
The poems by Van Dyke Parks are nice, but I’m not sure if Brian should be the one reading them; although his arrangements in the background are nice.
My standout favorites so far are: “Midnight’s Another Day,” “Good Kind of Love,” and “Going Home.” The whole second half of the album is pretty great though.
