Let it ride, Townspeople, any way you see fit, but especially feel free to kick out the Burly Rock!

I would just like to say that Google Books has an almost complete collection of Billboard Magazine from 1942-2008, which is great way of wasting time, erm, doing valuable historial research.

  2. GODDAMN, that is some burly rock!

  3. Also, I suppose that this is probably more well suited for the RTH Confessional Booth but I have been occasionally stuffing the ballot box for the polls because I can vote from both my work and home computers. And no I’m not going to stop doing it. Whew, I feel better now.

  4. BigSteve

It looks like BTO is only half burly. The skinny satin outfitted guitarist and the spangly shirted drummer could be from any 70s rock act.

Only Turner’s Look is appropriately burly — a logger’s leisure suit barely containing his bulk to the point that there’s full cleavage on display. Bachman has the right body type and the full beard, but dressing like a Canadian’s dream vision of a Moroccan pimp is really pushing the envelope.

cdm, ballot box stuffing is an accepted part of our culture. I also post from two computers and do likewise. Sometimes I split my vote.

BigSteve, your “vision” comment is very funny!

  6. hrrundivbakshi

All bass players need to look like this guy.

  7. mockcarr

Bass players are supposed to look like Maynard Ferguson?

  8. hrrundivbakshi

Mockcarr, you just like saying “May-NAHRD.”

I’m more than a little surprised that Eddie Vedder isn’t an option in the Tool poll. I can think of no one more deserving the title.

Although Pearl Jam’s recent shilling for Target makes me like him more. Not sure why exactly.

  10. I have a new favorite rock feud.

On an unrelated note, does anyone know who plays drums on Stevie Wonder’s “Sugar.” Holy crap, that’s some hot beats!

  11. I know we have some Sam Phillips fans here in the hall whom I figure would be interested in this:

“Singer-songwriter Sam Phillips has launched a year-long program to sell her music as high-quality MP3s (at 320kbps). At her website, Phillips christened her Oct 1 program, The Long Play.

“Long Play is a year of music. While digging for inspiration and ‘journal-ing’ the process of writing and recording, I will release 5 EP’s and a full-length album through samphillips.com. There is no record company involved – this is just between us.
“As a subscriber, every two months you will automatically receive a high-quality digital EP made up of new songs, new versions of my old songs, seasonal songs, or previously unreleased songs. (The first EP is entitled ‘Hypnotists in Paris’; a collaboration between myself and The Section Quartet.)

“At the end of the Long Play, next fall, you will receive a full-length digital album. This is the most music I’ve ever released in a one-year period. Essays, video, photos and audio logs will make the Long Play part music, book, magazine, laboratory, radio program and curiosity collection.

“Will opening up some of the creative process affect the way I write and record the music? Will it affect how you hear it? I have no idea, and there’s only one way to find out… please join me for the Long Play.”

Subscription is US$52 a year which will get you five digital EPs, one full-length album, a bonus track with each EP and the album, plus additional tracks throughout the year. Long Play may include live concert footage, rehearsal tapes, demos, behind-the-scenes footage and interviews, etc. The first EP, “Hypnotists In Paris” has already been sent to subscribers. Some fans are holding out for lossless FLAC format.”

What do you believe you would write if you wrote a paperback?

  1. You know, Mr. Mod, you once asked generally what those of us with a taste for Jandek are latching onto out of his music.

I think I know my answer to this now: the Jandek songs I like (which for the most part are the solo songs with acoustic guitar and vocals) are basically the blues in terms of their form and structure. But unlike just about every other suburban white boy who has ever played the blues, there is absolutely no sense of Blues Hammer minstrelsy in his music. And this makes it a purer personal expression than it would be if he was going on about meetin’ his-uh wuuuuuuuhmun down at de crossroads while he was playing some tenth-generation copy of “Dust My Broom.”

So there you go: I like Jandek because he’s like Beefheart, only much more so.

  2. Mr. Moderator

Your delayed answer is MUCH appreciated. No joke! This is the power of Rock Town Hall.

For those of you checking in who have not yet registered – that all-important function that will allow you to comment – The Great 48’s carefully considered answer to a question that arose a month ago is the best example I’ve seen yet at the access these Halls of Rock grants to real rock dialog. Thanks.

  3. I like Jandek too, cause he’s funny. Jandek is the kind of artist I thought Beck was until I found out that Beck is a giant asshole.

A paperback huh? let me think about it. I’ll get back to you in a month or so.

  4. Mr. Moderator

This, by the way, is the sort of “mash-up” that that Love album should have delivered.

  5. I’ve tried to start a novel for about 3 years now as part of National Novel Writing Month (http://www.nanowrimo.org/) since a friend bought and sent me the book “No Plot, No Problem” by Chris Baty. I always tank at about the 3rd chapter, but the one I’m always trying to finish is a kind of haunting slice of life story that takes place in the early 90s. It has a working title of The Isolationist’s Blues.

  6. Mr. Moderator

If I wrote a paperback it would be either a story of how to fail in the music business with dignity or a novel concerning a character who sees beauty in the desires that fuel everyday failures. Perhaps these plots are one and the same.

  7. I like this: “a novel concerning a character who sees beauty in the desires that fuel everyday failures.”

  8. You should read two of my favourite authors Mr. Mod – Haruki Murakami and Julian Barnes, esp. Staring At the Sun by Barnes. Rock biographies are just the tip of the iceburg lettuce with me.

  9. Mr. Moderator

I like the Murakami novels I’ve read a lot. I don’t think I’ve read a Julian Barnes novel yet. I’ll keep my eyes open. Thanks.

  10. Mr. Moderator

No love for “Ticket to Ride” in today’s poll. Interesting. I would have thought this would garner at least 1 vote.

  11. Big ups for Murakami hereabouts too.

  12. Cool. Did both of you read Norwegian Wood, or Hard-boiled and the end… both awesome. I gotta get Wind-Up Bird Chronicle.

  13. Mr. Moderator

Of Murakami, I’ve read The Wild Sheep Chase, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicles, and something else (forget the title). I haven’t read Norwegian Wood yet, although we own it. My wife’s read those and another 4 or 5.
