Sick day: I’ll be checking in now and then, when awake. I trust you, of all people, won’t spoil my day.

  1. R.I.P. Marvin Isley

    http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/08/arts/music/08isley.html

I would’ve written a post about this — I really got into ’70s-era Isleys a year or two ago — but there’s a depressing dearth of clips of the band in their prime with Marvin on YouTube.

  2. hrrundivbakshi

Oh, man. I am probably the hugest Isleys fan here in the Hall. I need to finally come through with an appreciation, which I’ve been planning for, oh, years.

RIP, Marvin. You will be missed, but thanks for everything — and everything was a LOT.

Both Conan and Trey Anastasio of Phish (local guy) were sporting Flyers’ jerseys at the Tower last night!

Hockey jerseys continue to reign supreme among rockers!

I caught Strasburg’s last 4 batters: AMAZING! He reminds me of Justin Verlander.

  6. mockcarr

I went, I saw, Strasburg conquered.

    Wow, just…Wow.

  7. Regarding the poll:
    1. Roots Rock
    2. Two way tie between Deadhead and Anglophile, depending on what songs they’re playing
    3. indie rocker
    4. Zappa

Was in Vegas this last weekend and saw two interesting rock related things.

    1. In Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum (far more fun than you’d think ’cause you are allowed to touch!) then had a “rock” music section that included; Elvis (of course), James Brown, Little Richard, Madonna, Britney Spears, Hendrix, Snoop Dog, Tupac, The Boss… Not that all are deserving but from either a musical or popular POV I can understand why they were all there, except for Lenny Kravitz. Lenn Kravitz? WTF? Was the musee financed by the Kravitz Foundation or something?

The other thing I think I’m going to post on the Main Stage…

    QUICK QUESTION:

Does this sound really good, or really bad?

Dunno about the album, but Tom’s answers are good.

All-Star Jam

Can you have a supergroup that consists of largely unknown musicians from largely unknown bands? It’s rhetorical.

Who else is in this video beside Jah Woble, Gerry?

  2. The Back Office

Martin Atkins (PiL, Pigface), Jah Wobble (PiL), Geordie Walker (Killing Joke), and Chris Connelly (Revolting Cocks). Touted as a “supergroup” in some circles.

  3. The Back Office

Oh, the band is Damage Manual. That you only recognized one guy, re-enforces my “supergroup” suspicions. But then again I can only think of one guy from Asia off the top of my head and they were the definitive Supergroup. Yes? Perhaps a true “supergroup” must be comprised of largely unknown members?

    AMERICAN IDOL UPDATE

Let me just step into the time machine and travel into the future around 24 hours… let’s see… yes, here we are:

    Phil Stacey, OUT
    Sanjaya Malakar: Top 3
    Beatbox guy: Top 3
    Jordin Sparks: Top 3
Melinda Doolittle: Middle of the pack
    LaKisha: MoP
    Haley: Bottom 3
    Timberfake: Bottom 3

Seroiusly, Sanjaya is a fucking teevee *genius*. I laughed out loud, in sympathy, at that camera-hogging, wondrous performance. Bravo.

We just upgraded to HDTV. I saw about 2 minutes of Haley, I think her name was, being judged by the esteemed panel. Man, Paula Abdul and Simon Dickhead are scary looking in Hi-Def! MC Skat Cat must be counting his blessings for having moved on from Paula.

  6. I’m going to partially disagree with our friend from the east.

    Bottom three: Haley, Phil, Lakisha

All three will deserve to be there. Haley in particular was her worst ever and that’s saying something, plus she wasn’t even hot this week. Bad hair and makeup.

But…I’m thinking this might be Lakisha’s week. She did a barely adequate version of an overplayed song, but the real reason she might go was something that has nothing to do with her music: she looked fat.

I mean, okay, news flash: Lakisha IS fat, and she’s not apologetic about it. But tonight she was fat in an ill-fitting dress that made her look about twice her normal size. And that’s going to hurt her in the minds of a lot of the people who vote. The fact that she turned in a forgettable performance while being poorly dressed could be enough to cast her off.

It’s not that I agree with this mindset — to get a mental picture of my college girlfriend, take Lakisha, give her Jordin’s hair and make her about a foot taller — but I’ve noticed that the combination of bad vocals and bad clothes can be a killer for female contestants. Which is why I suspect Haley as my second choice: horrible look, plus she was audibly out of breath by the middle of the first verse and not even trying to sing by the end, relying solely on glory notes and ad-libs.

  7. Having watched AI a few times this season, my predicted winner is Jordin Sparks. She has a great set of pipes, is “cute as a button” and is multi-ethnic. She could bring AI back into the pop realm which is where it should be musically-speaking.

  8. New Topic –

Who is the best songwriter at each instrument?

    Lead Vox
    Lead Guitar
    Rhythm Guitar
    Bass
    Drums

Include only the musicians primary instrument – McCartney would only count as a bassist and Lennon as a rhythm guitarist.

  9. Ooops – also include Keyboards

  10. Excellent topic idea, Andy!

    Lead Vox- Damon Albarn
    Lead Guitar- Richard Thompson
    Rhythm Guitar- David Byrne
    Bass- Paul McCartney
    Drums- Stevie Wonder
    Keyboards- Jon Brion

  11. hrrundivbakshi

Come on, Oats — listing Stevie as a “drummer” is cheating. I’d say Andy Sturmer is the strongest *drummer* songwriter I can think of.

And Jon Brion ain’t no keyboardist!

  12. Come on, Oats — listing Stevie as a “drummer” is cheating.

How so? That’s not a drum machine on “Superstition.”

And Jon Brion ain’t no keyboardist!

    Huh?

  13. hrrundivbakshi

Andy’s rules were clear: *primary* instruments only. I wouldn’t say Stevie’s *primary* instrument is drums (and, please spare me the pince-nex about how he started off playing drums; by that logic, we should have him listed as a harmonica player). Stevie’s *primary* instrument is keys. And Jon Brion’s *primary* instrument is guitar!

  14. Okay, point well taken. My amended list.

    Lead Vox- Damon Albarn
    Lead Guitar- Richard Thompson
    Rhythm Guitar- David Byrne
    Bass- Paul McCartney
    Drums- Andy Sturmer
    Keyboards- Randy Newman

  15. hrrundivbakshi

    My list:

    Lead Vox- David Lee Roth
    Lead Guitar- Steve Cropper
    Rhythm Guitar- Keith Richards
    Bass- Paul McCartney
    Drums- Andy Sturmer
    Keyboards- Stevie Wonder!

  16. mockcarr

    Lead Vox – Little Richard
    Lead Guitar – Chuck Berry
    Rhythm Guitar – John Lennon
    Bass – Paul McCartney
    Drums – Andrew Scott
    Keyboards – Peter Holsapple
