I don’t remember what I was doing at that time. I think I was watching something else, and then I heard the news that night. Oh boy.

  1. Great video, Homes.

My All-Star Jam is Song Payoffs. That is, is it worth it to sit through X minutes of a bad song to get to some point in the tune that you do like.

For me, I always think of Led Zepplin’s Trampeled Under Foot – Do I have the patience to sit through 3 + minutes of that same riff and hearing Plant moan “talkin ’bout love” a zillion times to get to the Payoff of the breakdown where the clavinet does the little chord solo and the drum fills. Then it gets back to the boring riff. For me it’s not worth it. I’ll flip radio stations and try to time it just to hear the payoff.

However, I do think it is worth it to listen to the sucky Doobie Brother’s Rollin Down the Highway to hear the payoff(s) of when they breakdown for the riff.

I love this Song Payoff perspective! I know what you mean about “Trampled Under Foot”. This brings to mind another Zeppelin song that I do feel is worth the payoff: “Food in the Rain”. I love that song’s main riff, and I love the overall sound, but after about 30 seconds, Plant’s silly vocals wear thin. At that point the question is, Do I hang in there for the guitar solo and subsequent steel band jam? The answer is, Yes!

I’ll have to recall specifics, but I find Costello’s Blood and Chocolate to be an album that’s rife with these payoff assessments.

Song Payoff- Interstellar Overdrive. I dig the beginning. The spacey interlude though drags a bit for me but then becomes totally worth it (perhaps because it dragged) when they kick back into the song.

Hey Mr. Moderator what’s your beef with Almost Famous? Agreed the Tiny Dancer scene was painful to watch and it certainly wasn’t anywhere near a great rock movie. But I enjoyed it if for nothing else than Kate Hudson’s rack and the use of Feel Flow for the credits. To put it into the same category with Stigwood shite is just not right.

Here’s my beef with Almost Famous, or shoud I say beefs:

    1. It’s way too clean This 15-year-old kid’s hanging around with Led Skynyrd and the only STINK (broadly, including groupies, drugs, alcohol, shady promoters) he comes close to being exposed to is a soft-core tumble with some wood nymphs?

    2. I can’t stand Goldie Hawn’s daughter. I think she’s a nondescript actress and, in terms of Look, a watered-down version of Mom, who had all sorts of pleasing imperfections and quirks.

    3. The scenes with the Mom are too much, too understanding. The sister’s no great shakes either. All family scenes should have been substituted with the family from The Wonder Years.

    4. To whatever degree this story is a true tale based on Cameron Crowe’s real-life experiences, Crowe is an equivalent candy ass! His character’s loving, nonjudgmental, unquestioning perspective is all that’s wrong with too many who claim to carry the banner for rock ‘n roll. Crowe and that Dave Marsh guy must get together, roast marshmellows, and spin mediocre ’70s rock albums on their free time.

I think that about covers it.

    1. He’s young and naive and scared of the big rock and roll world.

    2. I think the issue here is that you haven’t had the opportunity to have sex with her like I have.

    3. Agreed. Though I like the sister’s Pan-Am era outfit.

    4. Agreed but I love Fast Times.

Given all that, this is an Oscar worthy movie compared to Sgt. Pepper. It is no where near that bad.

Modern American Stadium Rock Is Not Dead!

Just wanted to say that I watched Kelly Clarkson’s warm-up performance for the Daytona 500, and — lo and behold — it was actually pretty good! The songs were competently written, her band was tight and aggressive without being assholish (and they dropped a snippet of “Iron man” into “Miss Independent,” which was nice) — good stuff. Plus, Kelly has a bootie that nobody can deny!
