Man, this video makes me glad I never saw Meat Puppets live. The guitar-playing brother has a really bad stage stance – he’s hunched over in a non-manly way like that John Mayer guy (sp?). The drummer’s got even worse stage posture.
The drummer must have ended up in daily chiropractor sessions.
I saw them live probably 30 or more times and they were solid hit-and-miss. Either too drunk to play, which at least made for a good time atmosphere as they played in these little tiny places with like 30 people.
OR, they were amazing, transcendental.
Curt’s guitar posture would start with the hunch but when he got going he would arch way back and then during fast bits he’d bend back and forth. He’s a tall dude and that would make for this wild sort of organic rubber Hendrix kind of thing.
Big dudes often dwarf their guitar and make it look like a toy.
I never knew he was a tall guy – that explains the John Mayer hunch. They’ve got a new album coming out soon – wonder if it will have even a speck of the old magic.
“huevos” was a decent enough start (and a welcome rebound from “mirage”, which was…what…their “discipline era King Crimson” phase? all those repeating patterns that worked on “up on the sun” sound tedious and academic on that album). but after “huevos” it’s a pretty steep dropoff.
at the beginning of their tenure, it’s almost like each album is a distinct phase, though they manage to take the “up on the sun” idea and milk it for an ep, and maybe one could see “mirage” as an extension of that.
regarding the new album, is the bassist brother out of rehab and clean? or did he die? i can’t remember…
It’s on Emusic already and at first sample didn’t impress nearly as much Curt’s solo disc.
They’re four piece and didn’t bring the original drummer (Derrick Bostrom) back in. Does anyone know why? I haven’t looked yet.
Derrick was an awesomely nice dude. Very simple but ultra nice. When the band broke, he was the one that started and maintained their website, oversaw the CD rereleases (bonus material)… In short, he kept it going but the brothers always treated him poorly.
“Street Fighting Man” is hanging on in its showdown with “Satisfaction” but this day’s not yet over. It will be interesting to see which song moves forward and which Stones song will await the victor. I do hope no one will regret not voting.
nice one gerry.
a band with three distinct phases!
That third phase needs to be a good one!
Hrrundi, what’s your take on Meat Puppets’ ZZ Top phase?
