Side four:

“Song With Rose” — As in Roseanne Cash, who co-wrote the lyrics. Vaguely “country” sounding, in that there’s a steel guitar, but again, there’s no sense that he’s trying to do a country song.

“Pardon Me, Madam, My Name Is Eve” — Co-writer this time is Loretta Lynn, but there is no country whatsoever in this tune, which is mostly based on Steve Nieve playing a clavinet. Weirdly, it’s reminding me a bit of Lambchop in how the various instruments are layered, and that’s no bad thing.

“Go Away” — Bad ending to an album I’m pretty enthusiastic about. Kind of a tossed-off bar-band jam. Meh.

Overall assessment: quite positive, overall. A few weaker songs, but they’re in the minority, and the overall decision not to do a themed album like so many of his more recent projects was a smart one. Best album since? Probably The River In Reverse, actually. I really liked that one.

The lure of the Costello/gatefold/vinyl fetish combo is driving me mad with desire. I may have to go out and buy this thing today. Thanks for sharing, Great One.

  2. I heard “Turpentine” on the way into work on WXPN. The drums reminded me of an older EC song but couldn’t place it…wasn’t digging it too much. The song didn’t seem to go anywhere really… I can’t stand the album title and I haven’t even read that restaurant profile yet…

He did seem to be in fine voice though. (But didn’t I hear he was doing some music for some silly dance piece recently? WTF?)

    My (Jaded) 2cents.
