OK, I give The Beach Boys, post 1972, way too much leeway, but I don’t think I can let this one pass without calling BULLSHIT.
Take a look at the PR blurb that was on the email announcing an upcoming Beach Boys concert in Atlanta:

NOT a '90s artist!
The list of 1990s bands (mostly alt-rock) that were still out there workin’ for a livin’ was an easy target for bashing—at least for me. When y’all jumped in and turned it into a pile on of alterna-bashing, I started to have second thoughts about this fine group of young musicians that just wanted to let their hair down and fly thier flannel flag (or union jack).
I propose another look at the 1990s.
Let’s create the RTH Top 25 CDs of the 1990s from bands that are considered ’90s bands (as in I would count Jane’s Addiction, although their debut came out in ’88 or ’89 [I had it in high school, so it had to have been out prior to spring 1989]). This is not a place to list REM‘s Automatic For the People or a ’90s Tom Waits record; this is for ’90s bands.
Please consider the following criteria/limitations when posting your thoughts on the matter:
I’ll start with my own:
I was driving home from work last night and thinking about the election today. After a scan across the many news and political Sirius/XM stations that were all at commerical (on paid radio?)…so I flipped to music.
Station A, song #1: “Nookie,” by Limp Bizkit
Station B, song #2: “Lovin’ Every Minute Of It,” by Loverboy
This is my musical equivelent of the mid-term elections.
Is there a lesser of two evils?
Keep the personal politics out of this: If you had to decide between supporting one of these “candidates” which one would you pick, and why?
Hey, Maybe you really dig one of these songs. Maybe Mike Reno is your cousin and you support him unconditionally. Maybe you chose “Nookie” last time and feel burned.
How many bands has Sammy been in?

Six degrees of separation got me to this YouTube performance of “A Whiter Shade of Pale”: Hagar Style.
Neil Schon has a pretty cool (if heavily ’80s processed) tone one this, even kinda does a “Little Wing” part at the beginning.
I just looked this up on Wikipedia and it looks like this live version was actually the single (they recorded two live shows, removed the crowd noise and used the tracks for their “studio” record).
Electric Stevieland (my much discussed SRV and Hendrix tribute group) will go head-to-head with The Oscars this Sunday (at Blind Willie’s, Atlanta, GA). I will report back as to whether this is the start of great things or a one-time-only performance.
Elvis Costello & Bruce Springsteen together with just about the best band I could ever put together (Nils Lofgren, Steve Nieve, Roy Bittan, Davey Faragher, and Pete Thomas).
Seriously, this would be my dream band right here. (Or at least my dream back-up band.)
99% of the time this kind of thing is a train wreck, but EC and Bruce have bands that actually know their place as back-up musicians.
Having the balls to play a Sam & Dave song at The Apollo to boot!
So Electric Stevie Land is the Townspeople’s choice.
I will present this to the band as “my” pick and I’ll report back.
In the meantime, let’s have some fun with Guess the Cover Band’s Object of Affection by Their Name Game.
I have one example and one band (fictitious, of course) and then two to guess…I’m sure Townspeople can come up with better ones.
Space Monkey Mafia – Billy Joel Tribute Band (from “We Didn’t Start the Fire”)
Caviar Four Star Daydream – ?
Testimonial Pictures – ?
Can you identify the real bands being held in tribute? What real or fictional tribute band name have you got?
