Seems like we’ve been through something like this before.

There are two issues of vital national interest in the cross hairs here.

1. Was Ollie Halsall a Rutle?
2. Who was Dirk McQuickly? Eric Idle or Ollie Halsall?

Here’s what various sites on the internets have to say:

‘Leppo, The Fifth Rutle’ (Stu Sutcliffe) — seen only in a still photograph in the film – the photo showed Ollie Halsall, who actually played and sang on the soundtrack. (Halsall, in real life, was one of the four musicians who performed all The Rutles’ music, the others being Innes, Halsey and Fataar. Idle did not actually play or sing on the soundtrack.)

The fourth ‘real’ Rutle, Ollie Halsall, died in Spain in 1992.

Ollie desperately wanted to portray ‘Paul’ in the Rutles, alongside Admiral’ John Halsey’s ‘Ringo’. The US backers needed a ‘star’ however, and the part of ‘Dirk McQuickly’ was taken by Rutles creator Eric Idle himself Ollie had to settle for the ‘walk-on’ part of Leppo (original bassist ‘Stuart Sutcliffe’). But Halsey recalls that, when it came to recording the soundtrack, Idle couldn’t quite handle the vocals parts so, Ollie, as well as creating the amazing BeatIe guitar pastiches, also sang ‘Paul’s’ part, speeded up slightly. In this and other respects, Halsall’s contribution the Rutles project has never been fully recognised.

Video after the fold.

UPDATED AGAIN WITH TOMORROW’S CONTRIBUTION (THANKS TO TOWNSMAN SATURNISMINE)
UPDATED BELOW THE FOLD WITH BOWIE’S CONTRIBUTION TO THE GENRE (THANKS TO TOWNSMAN SHAWNKILROY)

I LOVE Syd Barrett and even kinda like this song but I fear it may be the song that launched the Gnome Rock genre. Is Syd to blame? Tell me. I can take it. Is he responsible for…

If you know the artist please refrain from commenting. If you don’t, please offer your unbiased opinion of the following tracks. Those with the biggest balls will contribute first. Feel free to guess or speculate, but the point is to tell us what you think of the tunes man.

sammymaudlin Shares the Gift of Music

Many if not most of you probably know of or own this track. I present it here because this is a great underrated band that I feel every rock music lover should have an opportunity to explore. It is special to me as it is one of the first bands that I discovered on my own. As opposed to hearing it on the radio, reading about them or having a friend turn me on. I saw them open for The Meat Puppets when all they had was an EP and it was when The Meat Puppets just started sucking. These guys were one of the best live shows I have ever seen. I probably saw them a dozen times over the years and as they never built a large following it was always in some dive bar which was just so perfect for them. There’s no way I could pick a favorite song so I just grabbed one off an album that has a connection to a Friend of the Hall.

Earlier this week, the Al-Qaida #2 offered an interview to anyone that wanted one. Details here.

Essentially anyone can submit questions and that al-Zawahri would

…take questions until Jan. 16, after which al-Zawahri would answer them “as much as he is able and at the soonest possible occasion.” It did not say whether his answers would come in writing, video or audiotape.

We all know the power of music and I believe the time has come to take the RTH brand of healing to the world stage. In an effort to foster peace, love and understanding amongst all of Earth’s beings, I present this special Dugout Chatter exclusively for Ayman al-Zawahri. Let the music be your master, Ay, and give us your gut reactions to the following:

• Best effigy burning album?
• What about for the morning after?
• Parliament or Funkedelic?
• What album did you spin the most during your first Jihad?
• What do you sing when you’re beheading a capitalist pig?
• Gwen or Shirley?
• Do you prefer your Replacements with or without Bob Stinson?
• Which musician would you most like to see volunteer for a suicide bombing?
• What bands are you rocking to these days?

At this point, I open this historical opportunity to my fellow Townsmen (sorry Townswomen but, for this exercise we’ll need you to go ahead and put your RTH burqas on). What would you ask al-Zawahri?

UPDATED AGAIN AGAIN!
UPDATED AGAIN!
UPDATED!

mrclean: Thanks for the Dazing and Confusing post on Jimmy Plage-rist. Like loophole I’ve always thought this subject would make an interesting post. I’m a big ZepHed but definitely not an apologist, especially considering that I’m also Sillie for Willie Dixon.

Here is a down and dirty collection of songs that some might say strike a resemblance to some Zeppelin compositions. Since Willie Dixon sued, he now shows up as author or co-author on all his tracks here. I leave it to a better man than I to dig out his vinyl and tell us which one(s) were not credited until after the lawsuit. I believe Howlin’ Wolf, post-lawsuit, is now credited on The Lemon Song. Gallows Pole is listed as a “Traditional” yet Huddie Ledbetter/Alan Lomax are credited on Leadbelly’s version.
