L to R: Dennis Wilson, Al Jardine, Brian Wilson, Mike Love, and Carl Wilson, Hawaii, late August 1967; Bruce Johnston missed the trip as Brian decided to go. Credit: Michael Ochs Archives/Corbis Images.
I think rock bios of the Boys focusing on their early years point out that Brian was actually a decent high school athlete. He was on the football team. Fear of disappointing Murray Wilson certainly factored into his success.
Mike Love wins any intramural Beach Boys race as he has the ability to project his astral form to the finish line almost instantaneously. Arrive without traveling, you know?
Also, he’d trip any of the others if they threatened to pass him. Especially Al.
Mike Love seems to be one the most universally disliked rock stars that has (probably) done nothing so heinous as to warrant the bile. I know I can’t stand him. The only other person that pops to my mind that seems similarly reviled may be Gene Simmons. Again, neither of those guys did anything as horrible as Chris Brown, but their fan clubs are rather threadbare.
Dennis always had the best “Look” of all these guys — he displays it again here with the hip orange trousers. This is the pre-cursor to golfer Rickie Fowler’s “Sunday Orange.”
In my world, he wins — then retires to the beach house with a number of blondes.
Check out the photo-bomb from David Marks!

Wasn’t Dennis the only one who actually surfed…boy you can sure tell.

Well, as for explaining the Love hate, you know, as has been said, 90% of life is just showing up.
