Clean-Up Time

Getting rid of CDs this weekend. The edict has been out there for awhile — we remodeled last summer, things had to go in boxes, etc. It’s cold outside, there’s nothing else to do, and Mrs. funoka bought some of those massive CD storage folders, so it has begun. I got through “H” in my rock/pop boxes. As I do this, I am sending some stuff to Amazon’s trade in website — so far I have racked up about $150 in credit, which includes some random DVDs. It’s amazing what is worth a few bucks and what is worth a quarter, according to Amazon.

Of course, I’m keeping more than Mrs. funoka would like — I mean these Peter Himmelman CDs are out of print! Some stuff isn’t worth anything — why do I have two Cousteau CDs? Why do I have all these Grant Lee Buffalo CDs? Listened to some Dave Edmunds (DE 7th) and Heart (!). Getting into the L’s now.

I am now listening to LemonheadsThe Atlantic Years, which is pretty damn good.

I can understand your desire for cold, hard, cash (or at least credit) but I think that we should be setting up a RTH cd swap. (We ladies do this with old handbags, jewelry, clothes, etc, so why not cds?)

Mr. Royale and I purge cds relatively regularly and I would prefer the music to go to one of you rather than to selfish me in the form of credit at Amoeba.

I would happily start listing cds that we are considering evicting from our household if others are interested…

And I guess it’s the fact that I’m married to an artist, but I’m aghast that you are using the cd storage folders (I’m assuming, perhaps incorrectly, that you are jettisoning those cd covers) rather than keeping the whole kit and caboodle. Isn’t part of the fun reading and re-referencing those musician and production credits? Perhaps I would feel differently if I saw your cd collection; that you are using “massive” cd storage folders and are only at “h” suggests you have quite the library.

I might be the only person who thinks Grant Lee Buffalo’s last album Jubilee is nearly perfect.

  3. I am keeping the booklets. The jewel cases got trashed.

  4. Good point. Saved from the Amazon box!

That’s a good idea. I’ve got to purge some cd’s and just haven’t gotten around to it. I have a Stones bootleg cd I love dearly that had a spot worn off the label side by one of those binders. I use the binders for a good chunk of bootlegs, but I’m much more wary with my factory made cd’s.

  6. I too recently purged and have boxes of CDs and some vinyl sitting in our spare room. This sounds like a really great idea. Mr. Mod, any way we can get an RTH Swap Meet page going, where people can easily post lists of what they have?

This is shaping up to be a good RTH community activity. Let me know if I can help facilitate. I will participate, but I will need guidance on how this sort of thing is organized. I will gladly let someone else organize this mission. Thanks!

  8. I am thinking that each person with a haul to unload should just create a post with a list of CDs etc. All such posts should share the same tag, perhaps “RTH swap meet.” People can use the comments section to claim a particular item.

Only thing I can’t quite figure out is how we exchange mailing info, since we all don’t necessarily have each others’ email, and people may not want to enter personal info on the site here.

  9. OK, let me think about how this can be set up. Do you want to conduct it in one open thread? Or I could have people sign up/notify me of their desire to participate at which point I could set up a private thread that only participants would have access to.

The easiest thing would be if we all sent the CDs to Mr. Mod, posted the lists here, and he matched the CDs up with townspersons, and mailed the CDs out. To keep this from being too burdensome, he could limit mailouts to once a week. Does that work for everybody?

The swap idea is interesting. On a related note, if I had a sense of what people collected I’d be happy to keep an eye out at my local Goodwill which sells LPs five for a buck or other local thrift stores. I’ve been finding a lot of good stuff lately.

I’m also down w/the swap idea. The question that I have to ask funoka is that isn’t there a used record store in your area that you can sell/trade those excess CDs? I don’t think Amazon pays that much in trades.

  13. The used CD stores are overrun with CDs. Great for collectors, bad for sellers. I’m one of those suckers who will buy the remastered or deluxe version of a CD I already have. Lately when I try to sell the old CD at a used store they tell me that they have 3-4 copies in stock and don’t need them. There are so few CD stores in Atlanta now that they are overrun with used stock.

Sadly the CD is almost worthless to 90% of the population (and anyone under 30) You used to have to hunt for some gold, now it’s just sad to see so many of your favorite CDs in the $5 rack at Wal Mart or in duplicate at the used CD store.
