With an influx of some interesting new Townspeople over the last couple of months, it’s clear we could use some time to get better acquainted with each other. The following questions are meant to elicit a sense of your rock ‘n roll values and posed in a way that should not compromise anyone’s privacy. Only about half of these questions are directly related to rock ‘n roll, but your candid answers to them will help build your profile and open new avenues of rock dialog. I would encourage Townspeople new (especially) and old to share. I can assure you it will be painless and ultimately rewarding. Here we go!

  • How did you find your way to the Halls of Rock?
  • Do you play an instrument? If so, which one(s)?
  • Will the vegetables that come with a meat or pasta dish play a major part in your decision between two attractive dishes on a menu?
  • What’s your feeling on Ray Liotta‘s rampage during the ending of the movie Something Wild?
  • Who is the rock ‘n roll equivalent of Liotta?
  • What song most recently stuck in your head, for better or for worse, hours after hearing it?
  • Have you ever dreamt of a song you’ve never actually heard in your waking life?
  • What’s the first record you remember buying that really bummed you out?
In the movie Bridge on the River Kwai, do you most identify with William Holden‘s character, Alec Guiness‘ character, the Japanese general‘s character, the American doctor who’s left muttering “Madness” after [SPOILER ALERT] the bridge blows, or the older guy who’s injured and needs to stay at the top of the hill with the beautiful, young Japanese women?
  • Does it matter more to you that a) Meg White can’t drum, b) that Meg’s kinda cute from the right angle, or c) that White Stripes have no bass player?
  • Assuming that the term “New Dylan” is no longer relevant, what artist is most worth being the “New” version of: Springsteen, Bono, Michael Stipe, Jeff Tweedy, Conor Oberst, someone else?
  • In one sentence, tell us what first comes to mind when you think about Jeff Tweedy.

Thanks, and in advance, I look forward to having gotten to know you better!

  1. I don’t know if I’m a “newbie” but I’m not an “oldie” either. Besides, I wanna play!

How did you find your way to the Halls of Rock?

I found The Hall while researching Elvis Costello’s relationship to Bruce Thomas.

Do you play an instrument? If so, which one(s)?

I began my musical journey through the trombone. As far as rock goes, I was frustrated drummer-turned-bassist. I now play bass in a band called Lately David.

Will the vegetables that come with a meat or pasta dish play a major part in your decision between two attractive dishes on a menu?

I tried to kick the ball, but my tennis flew right off. I’m red as a beet, ‘cuz I’m so embarrassed.

What’s your feeling on Ray Liotta’s rampage during the ending of the movie Something Wild?

I haven’t seen it yet. (It’s in my Netflix, though…)

Who is the rock ‘n roll equivalent of Liotta?

    Southside Johnny

What song most recently stuck in your head, for better or for worse, hours after hearing it?

    “Debris” by The Faces.

Have you ever dreamt of a song you’ve never actually heard in your waking life?

Yes. All the time. But the best was a country tune with the hook: “The stronger the whiskey, the sweeter the wine…” You have to ask me to sing it for you.

What’s the first record you remember buying that really bummed you out?

    Animalize by Kiss.

In the movie Bridge on the River Kwai…

    Holden.

Does it matter more to you that a) Meg White…

I have that live DVD from a couple of years ago. It’s like porn to me. I wish Meg White was at my house right now.

Assuming that the term “New Dylan” is no longer relevant, what artist is most worth being the “New” version of:

Of each of these guys? Or just the new version of Dylan? I guess Tweedy.

In one sentence, tell us what first comes to mind when you think about Jeff Tweedy.

I’m backing slowly into this world of Wilco, but I’m enjoying the ride. I really am digging the newest record…

How did you find your way to the Halls of Rock?
    Probably a link from Elbows

Do you play an instrument? If so, which one(s)?
    Bass, barely

Will the vegetables that come with a meat or pasta dish play a major part in your decision between two attractive dishes on a menu?
No and they won’t influence my beer choice either

What’s your feeling on Ray Liotta’s rampage during the ending of the movie Something Wild?
    Never saw it

Who is the rock ‘n roll equivalent of Liotta?
Ozzy or some other neutered metal singer

What song most recently stuck in your head, for better or for worse, hours after hearing it?
“Church of Indifference” by the Saints

Have you ever dreamt of a song you’ve never actually heard in your waking life?
More ambient stuff than a “song” per se

What’s the first record you remember buying that really bummed you out?
    “Moroccan Roll” by Brand X

In the movie Bridge on the River Kwai, do you most identify with —
Jack Hawkins’ character, who you call “the older guy”. Also, the medic character is a Brit not American.

Does it matter more to you that a) Meg White can’t drum, b) that Meg’s kinda cute from the right angle, or c) that White Stripes have no bass player?
Their first few singles were cool, that’s all that matters.

Assuming that the term “New Dylan” is no longer relevant, what artist is most worth being the “New” version of:
    Caetano Veloso

In one sentence, tell us what first comes to mind when you think about Jeff Tweedy.
Tweedy has a knack for publicizing his appropriation a lot of styles that he doesn’t really use.

    * How did you find your way to the Halls of Rock?

Don’t remember. It was a LONG time ago, back on RTH Chess. Maybe Velv sent me an invite?

    * Do you play an instrument? If so, which one(s)?

I do. Mostly guitar, but some drums, bass and keys.

    * Will the vegetables that come with a meat or pasta dish play a major part in your decision between two attractive dishes on a menu?

    AbsoLUTEly!

    * What’s your feeling on Ray Liotta’s rampage during the ending of the movie Something Wild?

    n/a

    * Who is the rock ‘n roll equivalent of Liotta?

    Patty Scialfa

    * What song most recently stuck in your head, for better or for worse, hours after hearing it?

After driving round and round DC the other day looking for parking, I couldn’t get that awful Tesla version of “Signs” out of my head. You know: “Sign, sign, everywhere a sign… blocking out the scenery, blah-blah-blah. Do this don’t do that, can’t you seeee the siiiiigns…” Glad to stick that piece of crap in *your* head, people!

    * Have you ever dreamt of a song you’ve never actually heard in your waking life?

    Sure. Don’t remember them, though.

    * What’s the first record you remember buying that really bummed you out?

Good question! There was something very wrong with Van Halen’s “1984,” but that couldn’t have been the first. Oh, probably my Jackson Browne-Turde two-fer, which I traveled hundreds of miles to buy based on all the rock-crit praise I had read over the years. Pee-YOU!

In the movie Bridge on the River Kwai, do you most identify with William Holden’s character, Alec Guiness’ character, the Japanese general’s character, the American doctor who’s left muttering “Madness” after [SPOILER ALERT] the bridge blows, or the older guy who’s injured and needs to stay at the top of the hill with the beautiful, young Japanese women?

    Don’t remember!

    * Does it matter more to you that a) Meg White can’t drum, b) that Meg’s kinda cute from the right angle, or c) that White Stripes have no bass player?

I have to admit, Meg’s boobs trump the fact that she can’t drum a lick. I might actually watch the band play if I could see some jiggle. Audio only, though? No thanks!

    * Assuming that the term “New Dylan” is no longer relevant, what artist is most worth being the “New” version of: Springsteen, Bono, Michael Stipe, Jeff Tweedy, Conor Oberst, someone else?

Michael McDonald. No, but seriously, I’d be interested in a “new Bon Scott” — or maybe somebody so great that the critics didn’t hesitate to call him or her the “new McCartney” or “new Lennon,” or maybe the “new Davies.” Not so interested in the “new Ringo” or “new Quaife.”

    * In one sentence, tell us what first comes to mind when you think about Jeff Tweedy.

What first comes to mind is the awesome Harris Tweed jacket I bought at the local thrift store for four American dollars.

Hey! I’m the noob and I am really diggin’ this site! Looking forward to more.

1- I stumbled upon the site while researching early Beatles. It was the Mach Schau post, it came up in one of my Hamburg searches. I have taken it to heart. Arthur Brown? Wow! Gimmicky but intense!

2- I own several instruments, play them? not really in front of people, haha. I have a full starter set of diatonic harmonicas, an Fender Acoustic ca 1997, and a cheep casio keyboard with lighting keys (I know, I know). While I don’t use them (except to compose, and I use the term loosely) I do sing lead vocals in a rock band in the Philly area.

3- Not really. Although as a pescatarian, Veggies are most often the main dish. haha.

4- I’ll let you know once I see it. I can only imagine Laughter as it is Ray Liotta.

5- Scott Stapp. Thinks he’s bad ass, isn’t really but is willing to throw a punch or two at P-nut and Chad Sexton. haha

6- The Black Spot from Murder by Death

7- Yes! I scramble over to my keyboard as I wake, knock it over and forget what I heard.

8- Do you mean the first album I bought that disappointed me as I loved the artist’s prior work or the first album that was sad but beautiful (Tom Waits, Elliot Smith, etc)?

9- The Doctor.. if I really had to choose.

10- Get some Bass in there!!

11- I think you have the lineage right there! Who follows Conor?

12- Billy Bragg and Woodie Guthrie and I can sleep happy.

  6. • How did you find your way to the Halls of Rock?
From the old message board which I discovered while on another, Philly-centric message board

    • Do you play an instrument? If so, which one(s)?
    Guitar and ukulele

    • Will the vegetables that come with a meat or pasta dish play a major part in your decision between two attractive dishes on a menu?
Yes, especially with the meat dish

    • Who is the rock ‘n roll equivalent of Liotta?
That chick from Bow Wow Wow?
    • What song most recently stuck in your head, for better or for worse, hours after hearing it?
If I Only Had A Brain (I’m learning it for an upcoming show)

    • Have you ever dreamt of a song you’ve never actually heard in your waking life?
    No

    • What’s the first record you remember buying that really bummed you out?
    Jim Carroll – Catholic Boy

    • Meg’s kinda cute from the right angle

    • Assuming that the term “New Dylan” is no longer relevant, what artist is most worth being the “New” version of: Springsteen, Bono, Michael Stipe, Jeff Tweedy, Conor Oberst, someone else?
Possibly Springsteen, since of all of them, he seems to be that last of his particular breed.

    • In one sentence, tell us what first comes to mind when you think about Jeff Tweedy.

Jeff makes often interesting recordings of tasteful, grown-up pop songs that camouflage what I suspect is a curmudgeonly nature.

  7. Mr. Moderator

    junkintheyard asked:

8- Do you mean the first album I bought that disappointed me as I loved the artist’s prior work or the first album that was sad but beautiful (Tom Waits, Elliot Smith, etc)?

Yes, that’s what I had in mind, although other Townspeople are welcome to take the question for what they think I meant.

    Nice answers!

  8. 1. A tiny little bloglink somewhere.
    2. I ain´t been to no music school.
    3. Never!
    4. If I´ve seen the movie I can´t remember any of it, sorry…
    5. Lemmy?
    6. Chic´s At Last I Am Free, as sung by Robert Wyatt.
    7. Happens all the time. Glad I´m not alone in this. They´ve got hit potential, too.
    8. Unknown Pleasures in a positive sense, Down In The Groove for a negative.
    9. Holden´s my main man.
    10. c, as I kinda dig bassless bands.
    11.Bob Marley or Fela Kuti.
    12. A poor man´s Jay Farrar.

  9. junkintheyard

hahaha. Mr. Mod- I’m not sure if you clarified whether you meant the former or later so I’ll answer both:

F- Live- Secret Samadhi. I could not believe they forgot how to use feedback as they had done so well in Throwing Copper.

L- While the album isn’t as such, “Sad Songs and Waltzes” the Willie Nelson cover at the end of Cake’s amazing Fashion Nugget album, I was moved in my high-school soul.

  10. junkintheyard

And I’m looking to see who’s the next Joe Strummer or Billy Bragg.

  11. Welcome Junkintheyard.

Which band do you sing in?

  12. junkintheyard

I sing in a band called “The Pali Cannon”
Only played out a few times, no where big.

  13. How did you find your way to the Halls of Rock?

a wikipedia article on david bowie’s cover of Dancing in the Street cited the Halls.

Do you play an instrument? If so, which one(s)?

guitar, bass, piano, random other trinkets.

Will the vegetables that come with a meat or pasta dish play a major part in your decision between two attractive dishes on a menu?

not usually. i’m more likely to get the one with french fries. mmm, french fries.

What song most recently stuck in your head, for better or for worse, hours after hearing it?

Time after Time by Cyndi Lauper was stuck in my head for a while.

Have you ever dreamt of a song you’ve never actually heard in your waking life?

Numerous times. I dreamt of a weirdo music video by some New Wave band playing some song that made of americans being obsessed with boobs. it was catchy, i wish i remembered it. they were british, or something.

What’s the first record you remember buying that really bummed you out?

Drama, by Yes. i was young and naive.

Does it matter more to you that a) Meg White can’t drum, b) that Meg’s kinda cute from the right angle, or c) that White Stripes have no bass player?

B, prolly. i don’t listen to them that often.

Assuming that the term “New Dylan” is no longer relevant, what artist is most worth being the “New” version of: Springsteen, Bono, Michael Stipe, Jeff Tweedy, Conor Oberst, someone else?

Jeff Tweedy’s a little old to be the new anything. I always saw him as a better educated Paul Westerburg. And Conor Oberst strikes me as a ‘sensitive singer-songwriter’ kinda guy, so maybe he works as a micheal stipe. The Arcade Fire seem closer to channeling Bruce and Bono.

In one sentence, tell us what first comes to mind when you think about Jeff Tweedy.

His last name really fits his voice. I dunno why.

  14. shonuffnyesido

How did you find your way to the Halls of Rock?

Do you play an instrument? If so, which one(s)?

I have enough trouble playing air guitar. LOL.

Will the vegetables that come with a meat or pasta dish play a major part in your decision between two attractive dishes on a menu?

    Cabbage is a deal-breaker.

What’s your feeling on Ray Liotta’s rampage during the ending of the movie Something Wild?

Blew me away the first time I saw it. Haven’t seen that movie in years.

Who is the rock ‘n roll equivalent of Liotta?

The Southside Johnny comparison beats anyone I can think of.

What song most recently stuck in your head, for better or for worse, hours after hearing it?

“Celebrate” thanks to Mr. Moderator bringing it up in that bar mitzvah story. What do they call it, an ear bug?

Have you ever dreamt of a song you’ve never actually heard in your waking life?

    No.

What’s the first record you remember buying that really bummed you out?

Taking this to refer to a case of dashed hopes I’d have to say Elton John’s “Rock of the Westies.” I got it through Columbia House.

In the movie Bridge on the River Kwai…

    Definitely the doctor.

Does it matter more to you that…

    b) Meg’s kinda cute from the right angle

Assuming that the term “New Dylan” is no longer relevant, what artist is most worth being the “New” version of…

Why isn’t there ever a New Lennon?

In one sentence, tell us what first comes to mind when you think about Jeff Tweedy.

    * In one sentence, tell us what first comes to mind when you think about Jeff Tweedy.

I dreamed about killing you again last night. And it felt alright to me.

I googled “new Al Kooper” and was directed to a Rock Town Hall thread on most insufferable old Dylan sidekicks, is how I found Rock Town Hall. I’ve never seen The Bridge Over the River Kwai or Something Wild, but I remember being bummed out by side four of Bruce Springsteen’s The River LP and dreaming of a song called Something Else by the Kinks. I play the Jews Harp but not on Fridays. The Beach Boys “Vega-Tables” is now stuck in my head, though I always choose the pasta dish regardless of any vegetable choice.

Mr. Mod invited me to the old version of the Hall based on my harangues on the Big Takeover list.

I often order just the veggies, but I also might want to avoid eating the same veg I ate earlier in the day.

    * What’s your feeling on Ray Liotta’s rampage during the ending of the movie Something Wild?

I haven’t seen it since it was shown in the theater, so I don’t remember.

    Willy DeVille.

    * What song most recently stuck in your head, for better or for worse, hours after hearing it?

Ever since I got the reissue of Black & Blue, the riff from Hot Stuff has been stuck in my head, often when I wake up.

    * Have you ever dreamt of a song you’ve never actually heard in your waking life?

    Not that I recall.

    * What’s the first record you remember buying that really bummed you out?

The only thing that I recall is getting the Sir Douglas Quintet’s 1+1+1=4 as a freebie and HATING it. I later developed the understanding that it’s a work of genius, like most of Doug’s work, but at the time I thought it was a complete joke.

    * In the movie Bridge on the River Kwai…etc.

I don’t think I’ve seen it since they showed it to us in summer camp when I was a kid, so who knows?

    * Does it matter more to you that a) Meg White can’t drum, b) that Meg’s kinda cute from the right angle, or c) that White Stripes have no bass player?

I want to hear the New New Barbarians.

    * In one sentence, tell us what first comes to mind when you think about Jeff Tweedy.

That’s guy’s got nerves of steel.

  20. Ha! I read “Who is the rock ‘n roll equivalent of Liotta?” as “Who is the rock ‘n roll equivalent of LOLITA”, hence my perplexing answer about Bow Wow Wow.

I like shawnkilroy’s answer but I’ll go with someone like Danzig. He’s portrayed as a bad ass but I don’t really buy it.

Also, someone mentioned Rock of the Westies being their first musical disappointment and I would have to agree. I was a huge Elton John fan in middle school and either ROTW or Blue Moves cured me of that for a long time.

  21. 2000 Man

How did you find your way to the Halls of Rock?

    I don’t remember. I think divine intervention.

Do you play an instrument? If so, which one(s)?

    Nope.

Will the vegetables that come with a meat or pasta dish play a major part in your decision between two attractive dishes on a menu?

    No. More meat usually wins.

What’s your feeling on Ray Liotta’s rampage during the ending of the movie Something Wild?

Doesn’t he look like he’s “acting?”

Who is the rock ‘n roll equivalent of Liotta?

    The Monkees.

What song most recently stuck in your head, for better or for worse, hours after hearing it?

Some new Yoko song about the D Train. It’s got some really nice crunchy guitars, but she’s still kinda hard on the ears. But the riff was really cool.

Have you ever dreamt of a song you’ve never actually heard in your waking life?

I have like two or three dreams a year. I don’t remember the soundtracks.

What’s the first record you remember buying that really bummed you out?

    Gary Wright – Dream Weaver

In the movie Bridge on the River Kwai, do you most identify with William Holden’s character, Alec Guiness’ character, the Japanese general’s character, the American doctor who’s left muttering “Madness” after [SPOILER ALERT] the bridge blows, or the older guy who’s injured and needs to stay at the top of the hill with the beautiful, young Japanese women?

I don’t identify with anyone or anything about the military. I tend to question authority and I hate doing stupid things.

Does it matter more to you that a) Meg White can’t drum, b) that Meg’s kinda cute from the right angle, or c) that White Stripes have no bass player?

    A. Meg can’t play and drums are important to me.

Assuming that the term “New Dylan” is no longer relevant, what artist is most worth being the “New” version of: Springsteen, Bono, Michael Stipe, Jeff Tweedy, Conor Oberst, someone else?

The new Conor Oberst? I can’t stand the old one. Please label all sucky new artists with this tag so I don’t make any ill advised purchases!

In one sentence, tell us what first comes to mind when you think about Jeff Tweedy.

Uncle Tupelo is WAY better than Wilco.

    * How did you find your way to the Halls of Rock?

Turned left at Greenland. I believe it is Hrrundi’s fault, though the invite probably came from the Mod.

    * Do you play an instrument? If so, which one(s)?

I play the bass and lose.

    * Will the vegetables that come with a meat or pasta dish play a major part in your decision between two attractive dishes on a menu?

If I can find more than one thing to eat on a typical menu, it would factor.

    * What’s your feeling on Ray Liotta’s rampage during the ending of the movie Something Wild?

Very amusing. Of course, it’s always a Charlie that gets hurt.

    * Who is the rock ‘n roll equivalent of Liotta?

    Hank Rollins?

    * What song most recently stuck in your head, for better or for worse, hours after hearing it?

That damned Ting-Tings song about the drums, the drums, the drums, the drums.

    * Have you ever dreamt of a song you’ve never actually heard in your waking life?

I’m another guy with no dreams. Very few realities too.

    * What’s the first record you remember buying that really bummed you out?

The first Vanilla Fudge album. Play it slower, no slower than that, no make that TOO slow until you forget to breathe. Ugh.

Bill Holden is cool, ergo I can’t identify with him much as I would wish to, so I guess the doctor who mutters.

    * Does it matter more to you that a) Meg White can’t drum, b) that Meg’s kinda cute from the right angle, or c) that White Stripes have no bass player?

Of course it’s bothersome that there’s no bass, but perhaps that’s one less victim in that band. I guess it matters that I’ve never seen that right angle.

    * Assuming that the term “New Dylan” is no longer relevant, what artist is most worth being the “New” version of: Springsteen, Bono, Michael Stipe, Jeff Tweedy, Conor Oberst, someone else?

Where is the new Weird Al? I guess Flight of the Conchords is sorta doing pop music satire.

    * In one sentence, tell us what first comes to mind when you think about Jeff Tweedy.

When I forget how to talk, I sing.

cdm, I’m glad you explained your Bow Wow Wow answer re: Liotta/LOLITA! I know Liotta’s got a “feminine” side to him, but that seemed to be going way too far.

geno, welcome aboard! Look forward to hearing more from you.
