Jan 122013

As you may have heard, today is Rock Town Hall‘s birthday.

According to Cafe Astrology

If You Were Born Today, January 12

You have a strong character with a contrary streak, but overall, you are charming and intriguing. While responsible and basically security-minded, you can also be quirky and rebellious. You are very partnership-oriented, always in mind that things are better shared, even the smallest things and simplest of activities. It is not that you are dependent exactly–in fact, you have a decidedly independent streak–it’s more that you truly enjoy good company.

Read more about RTH‘s “year ahead” here.

The sorta odd thing is, that description above is pretty accurate.  Meanwhile…

A half-assed look around for what rocktsters share a birthday with RTH I found:
Melanie Chisholm (Spice Girls)
Raekwon (Wu-Tang Clan)
Chris Bell (Big Star)
Rob Zombie (White Zombie)
Charlie Gillingham (Counting Crows)
Per Gessle (Roxette)
Cynthia Robinson (Sly & The Family Stone)
William Lee Gordon (Oak Ridge Boys)
Zach de la Rocha (Rage Against The Machine)

Non rocksters include:
Kirstie Alley
Howard Stern
Joe Frazier
Jack London
Rush Limbaugh

I’m not thrilled with what I found honestly.  If I was ranking these as the most-to-least accurate, I’d put Chris Bell at the top and Rush Limbaugh at the bottom.  So says I.  What say you?  Or better yet can you find any others that are better or worse than these?

Better better yet, what rocksters or non-rocksters do you share a birthday with?  Which are you most proud of and which are you not?

I was born on February 28.  I have yet to find anyone with that birthday that I can identify with or hate for that matter.  The closest I can get, best|worst are…

The first, and likely last, time images of these two appear side-by-side.

It pains me that Robyn Hitchcock’s birthday is close on March 3 and George Harrison’s close on February 25.  But still…

Happy Birthday RTH!

As a proud representative of the powerful RTH Philadelphia bloc, I will always go to bat for Smokin’ Joe Frazier.

If I had to rate that list of RTH birthday-sharing musicians, I’d go:

    Chris Bell
    Raekwon da Chef
Cynthia “All the squares go home” Robinson
    Sporty Spice
    Rob Zombie
    Roxette Guy
    Oak Ridge Boys Guy
with Counting Crows Guy/Zach de la Rocha tied for dead last

  2. Suburban kid

    Barry Andrews (XTC)
    Gerry Beckley (America)
    Pat Dinizio (The Smithereens)
    Ben Folds
    Liam Gallagher
    Jennifer Hudson
    George Jones
    Neil Peart

I don’t have anyone I love or hate on mine either. Of course, my hate capacity (of musicians anyway) has decreased in my old age as I no longer care to argue as much about which noise is superior to other noises. Years ago, I’d have singled out at least one of these on the hate side. Several I have never heard, and I only have two of them on my itunes – one is a guilty pleasure, the other I just have the one track I used to play on my college radio show.

  3. October 18

    1. Chuck Berry

    2. a five way tie between Wynton Marsailis, Laura Nyro, George C Scott, Peter Boyle and Mike Ditka

    3. Zac Ephron

    4. Bristol Palin

    5. two way tie between Jessie Helms and Lee Harvey Oswald

  4. cliff sovinsanity

An odd bunch that would make an interesting supergroup:

    Robert Pollard
    Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz
    Larry Mullen, Jr
Bernard Edwards (bass player for Chic)
    Johnny Marr
    Annabella Lwin (Bow Wow Wow)
    Vanilla Ice
    Russ Ballard

  5. Joltin’ Joe Frazier is the birthday boy who best represents us. Don’t forget the man also carved out a career as a nightclub singer.

I share a birthday with Lou Gerhig. I aim to be the Iron Horse of blogging.

Nick Drake is the coolest musician born on my birthday.

  6. 2000 Man

Jan. 11, the day before RTH. I think that makes us Capricorns. We’re goat herders or something like that.

Mary J Blige – never heard her.
Clarence Clemons – Hey, I saw Brooce a couple times, and Clarence was fun.
Tim Rowlands – Checmical Brothers – Never heard him.
Naomi Judd – I don’t think I ever heard her, either.
Cody Simpson – Never heard him.

People I think are just cool born on my birthday:

    Amanda Peet – Actress
Carrol Shelby – Awesome car dude.
    Stanley Tucci – Actor
    Albert Hoffman – discovered LSD.

  7. Bronzed Nordic God

Although I’d rather have Cliff’s Robert Pollard with my birthday, I do get Iggy Pop which is almost as cool. Big drop off after that as I have Robert Smith and members of Wire, Cowboy Junkies, and Madness. I also have Queen Elizabeth and (befitting my status as a Scandinavian deity) Princess Isabella of Denmark. The taint of having Tony Romo though might be too much to bear.

  8. I can have an entire evening of light comedy and bloozy boozy acoustic music with Jan 19 birthers.

I’d just play some congas while Phil Everly and Dolly Parton strummed guitar for Janis. Cezanne is in charge of graphics and Richard Lester would direct the staging. Our lyricist would be Poe and we’d call ourselves Jr! Say ‘OW!’ You know, to seem relevant with all the kids using punctuation in their band names these days.

Opening act would be Classic TV Comedy Snippets with Jean Stapleton and Nicholas Colasanto. Please do not run afoul of JaVale McGee and Jeff Van Gundy, our doormen.

    Enjoy your evening.

July 26 Leos are a showy, artsy, but thinking bunch.

Alas, there were only three musicians I was familiar with: Mick Jagger, Dobie Gray, and my personal favorite, Roger Taylor of Queen.

There were eleven actors/actresses/directors, indicating what attention-hogs we are: Sandra Bullock, Kate Beckinsale, Kevin, Spacey, Vivian Vance, Jeremy Piven, Gracie Allen, Blake Edwards, Jason Robards, Stanley Kubrick, and my favorites, Olivia Williams (Rushmore!) and Helen Mirren.

Luckily, we include some dyspeptic writers, too: Aldous Huxley and George Bernard Shaw.

There were very few athletes, although my style-conscious self noted Dorothy Hamill!

Lastly, I am happy to share my collective unconscious with a titan in my field, Carl Jung.

  10. A shared birthday party (November 28th) with William Blake, Gloria Grahame (oh my !), Berry Gordy Jr, Ed Harris, Jon Stewart and Armando Iannucci (the funniest Brit around) would be fun.

Music from Randy Newman while Judd Nelson & Anna Nicole Smith are outside looking in.

It’s a pity that Jimi Hendrix and Bruce Lee were celebrating just the night before.

  11. ladymisskirroyale

Just saying that Gloria Grahame’s rendition of “I’m Just A Girl Who Can’t Say No” is one of my favorites in cinema history. I was so used to seeing her in that role that when we recently watched a old Noir, I didn’t recognize her for the longest time: it was the odd mouth of hers that did it.

My birthday — the great July 15 — is shared by:

Millie Jackson — performer of my all-time favorite spoken-word song intro in “Leftovers”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHrxgq9VtPI
Ian Curtis — a sacred birthday to some, completely wasted on me
Artimus Pyle — Perhaps the greatest drummer name in Rock history
Johnny Thunders — see Ian Curtis
Jeff Carlisi (.38 Special) — yawn
Trevor Horne (Buggles, inventor of the huge, hyper-processed sound of the 80s) — I repent!
    Linda Ronstadt — groan.

  13. Being no great fan of 50s musicals I don’t think I had ever seen that great clip of Ms Grahame. It’s the Noir “Big Heat”, “Bad & the Beautiful”, “In A Lonely Place” where she is the perfect “tart with a heart of gold” (mouth & all) which makes her welcome at any party.

    Barry Andrews (XTC)- That’s kewl.

  15. sammymaudlin

This could be the coolest overall list. And Iggy Pop might be the coolest common birthday as well.

Is that a Dalek you are using as an icon? Ex-term-min-ate! Or am I making no-sense here to anyone whatsoever with that question?

Like a I always say… No one I think is in my tree.

  16. sammymaudlin

I like “Roger Taylor” for you. Not sure why but it gives me a warm feelling.

  17. misterioso

I find it creepily appropriate that Rush Limbaugh and Howard Stern share a birthday.

  18. And allow me to pile on: Kudos to Mod and Sammy for keeping this place running.

  19. Bronzed Nordic God

Thanks Sammy. Having Iggy is way cool, no doubt about it. He is probably second on my list after Sir Robert Pollard (yes, Bob has already been knighted…in my mind!) of cool people I would like to share a birthday with.

I’m not sure why I chose a Dalek for my icon. Maybe after failing to find a picture of a statue that truly captured my radiant visage, I decided to ex-ter-min-ate my search and go with the Dalek.

  20. cherguevara

I’ve always been happy to share a birthday with Thomas Dolby, whose first two albums were a mainstay of my high school music years.

Joining Thomas in a jam session on our birthdays will by La Monte Young, Gary “Left Hand” Graffman, Justin Hayward, Billy Harrison from “Them” and Natalie Maines from Dixie Chicks. Could be a weirdly good jam.

Or, could have a hair-metal jam with Colin Hodgkinson (Whitesnike), Dan McCarrerty (Nazareth – a band I know nothing about), Al ATkins (Judas Priest), AJ Pero (Twisted Sister) AND Mike Tramp (White Lion). Yes, the Aqua Net sprays strong on my birthday.

Off to the sides sits Usher, he can have some cake.

  21. I live in Philly too. I sure remember “Smokin’ Joe Frazier. He was a true champion in character. I think the man on the right is Gilbert Gottfried. Who is other man? Kudos for everyone involved in keeping this site up.
