We would be remiss if we went through the month of JAMuary without featuring at least one jam by modern-day jam-band exponents Phish, so…

let us be remiss!

Along with the opportunity to flex one’s chops, a key aspect of jamming is the communal vibe that comes with a group of musical explorers, like, exploring new musical territory. This communal vibe is typically aimed at a sense of unification and liberation. The climactic moment is typically thought of as somehow groovy. But not every jammin’ band rolls that way.

Throbbing Gristle, “After Cease to Exist (32AR)”

This long jam is from a 2008, reunited Throbbing Gristle performance of their 1977 release, Second Annual Report, released late last year as Thirty-Second Annual Report. If this is your idea of a groovy coming together of musical explorers, god bless. That doesn’t mean you can’t step back and admire the coming together of musical explorers, even while you’ve got your cell phone out and one press of the Send button away from calling the police.

  1. This is possibly the only page on the interwebs that mentions both Phish and Throbbing Gristle, let alone having them share a context. Kudos!
