What if Altamont had never been filmed? Would it still live in infamy as this great symbol of the death of the 60’s? Sure the stories would have come out about the Hell’s Angels beatings and the stabbing of the concertgoer. But the movie seems to document and over emphasize the violence and misery of that day. To me the show just represents the poor choice of hiring a bunch of thugs as security.
You know, if things had only turned out differently Altamont might have been remembered fondly as the time Marty Balin got punched in the face by the Hell’s Angels. I’ve always admired the way Paul Kantner deadpans that line about Balin getting punched — “I’d like to thank you for that.” Nice touch.
Thanks to this clip, I now remember Altamont mainly for the topless hippie chicks dancing. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen boobs spin with that much velocity.
I’d also like to say that the final 10 seconds or so — Grace Slick’s explanation of why people are bashing each other in the face and what ought to be done about it — pretty much say everything that needs to be said about the idiocy of the hippie movement. Thank you, Mr. Mod, for helping explain my broadly anti-hippie stance, and for this moment of healing.
