In this latest installment of Last Man Standing, I’m looking for songs with animals in the title.

The rules:

  • The animal must appear in the title, not just the lyrics.
  • Once a specific animal has been mentioned, it can no longer be used. However, if for instance, “Dog” has already been used, “Dalmatian” is still in play.

As always, please just submit one answer per post. Once you have submitted an answer, you are the Last Man (or Woman) Standing, until someone trumps your answer. The game continues until we’ve exhausted our stock of answers or we can no longer stand it anymore.

Shamelessly pandering to our newfound prog-rock friends, I submit “Tiger in a Spotlight,” by ELP. (“Tiger” is now out of play.)

UPDATE
On this topic, bostonhistorian is Last Man Standing. Comments have been closed for this thread. Well played, Townspeople!

    Thanks:)

Oh, “Bluebird,” by Buffalo Springfield (no double points, though, for using a band with an animal in its name because “buffalo” is off the board.)

  67. You talking to me?

  68. “That’s a Moray” is freakin’ brilliant! Love this.

Talkin’ Mule Skinner Blues – The Fendermen

  76. ladymisskirroyale

    “Rock Lobster,” B52s.

cdm: I have been logging up serious
Saturday time re-acquainting pouring through the dusty cds in our music collection. Thanks a lot. No, really.

And “Pulling Mussels From A Shell” – Squeeze.

  77. I think the rules to this game might need to be explained again.

  78. Mr. Moderator

bobby, I was not talking to you. You (and no one, for that matter, to this point) had suggested a song title with “unicorn” or “Godzilla” in the title. No wiseacre, until now, had even tried to slip in “By the Time I Get to Phoenix.” I’m just looking ahead to the inevitable. “Wasp Man” definitely counts, from what I can tell! Play on, my man.

ladymiss, one rule I need to remind you of is the rule that states only ONE entry per comment. Part of the hidden goal for the author of any Last Man Standing post is to see if the thread can draw a record number of entries:) The real reason, of course, is to prevent against anyone hogging by posting a list of 20 entries at once. Keep ’em coming. “Pulling Mussels from a Shell” is an excellent one!

  79. Mr. Moderator

Oh, Shonen Knife’s “Making Plans for Bison.” That’s probably the last possible answer, right? 😛

  80. Thanks for the clarification, Mod. Say, aren’t we also supposed to wait until someone else has posted to post again, or have I gotten that rule wrong (I thought I broke that one, myself, back when I first started playing)?

  126. BigSteve

Isn’t one of the rules that people who don’t check to make sure their suggestion hasn’t been used before are permanently banned from the thread?

  127. I hope not.

    Meadowlark – Fleet Foxes

  133. Mr. Moderator

    BigSteve asked:

Isn’t one of the rules that people who don’t check to make sure their suggestion hasn’t been used before are permanently banned from the thread?

In a perfect and perfectly cruel world we should abide by that rule, but that would be one more thing to keep track of and then punish ourselves for if we lost track of that. For now, I think 20 push-ups or a lap around your nearest rock club will do the trick.

  134. ladymisskirroyale

Darn – there goes my “Rattlesnakes” by Lloyd Cole

I continue your reptile theme with “Chameleon Day” by Talk Talk

  135. “Copperhead Road” Steve Earle

  136. Mr. Moderator

    Martin Newell, “This Flamingo”

  137. ladymisskirroyale

So did Mod specify whether we need to wait until another person has posted before posting again???

It’s like a game of Crazy Eights – I’m returning the the bird category: “Vultures” by the Meat Puppets

  138. No, he didn’t, so I guess it doesn’t matter. Nobody else said anything about it, and I don’t remember clearly.

    “Butterfly” – Weezer

  139. Mr. Moderator

Yeah, so long no one posts 20 times in a row – that would just be bad form. Let’s keep this fun. I think cdm would agree.

“The Ecstasy of Dancing Fleas,” Penguin Cafe Orchestra

Surely there’s no topping that one!

  140. “Dodo” – David Bowie

  141. ladymisskirroyale

    Tarantula – This Mortal Coil

  142. “Yakety Yak” – The Coasters (heh heh heh…)

  144. The Goat Looks On, by the High Llamas. (this is not a llama entry, just goat.)

  145. ladymisskirroyale

So much for “Lectric Chilie Goat.” And good double entry, Cher, with the High Llamas…

  151. Mr. Moderator

Ooh, well played from the REO and Donovan catalogs! But I’ve got another:

“The Mole from the Ministry,” The Dukes of Stratosphear.

  152. Mr. Moderator

DAMN, now I need to do 40 push-up and run two laps around Johnny Brenda’s! I’ll go to bed and see if I’m absolved of my double-crime in the morning.,,but first, maybe I can redeem myself with Big Dipper’s “Man o’ War.”

    LMS!

    “I’m a Cuckoo,” Belle & Sebastian

    LAST MAN STANDING!

“Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver” – Primus

  176. Ladybird – XTC

    St. Christopher “The Hummingbird”

  178. Hummingbird was used somewhere back there, too.

    “Jenny Wren” – Paul McCartney

Sorry about the repeat. Not sure why “find” didn’t find the first hummingbird.

    Charlie Chesterman, “Mustang Twang”

  180. Oh my Lord, I hate doing push ups!

    How about this one…

London Homesick Blues/Home With The Armadillo by Gary P. Nunn?

Graham Parker “Carp Fishing on Valium”

  187. “Bird Dog” – The Everly Brothers – It is a specific type of dog (like the hound dog)- I looked it up.

  188. bostonhistorian

Lots of dog breeds are “bird dogs”: pointers, retrievers, spaniels, setters.

In any case, I’ve been saving this one up since it may open up a host of issues:

    The Move “Brontosaurus”

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ai7ZGzUgHrU

  189. There are different breeds that are considered hound dogs, too (Bloodhound, Basset Hound, Dachshund, Whippet, Rhodesian Ridgeback – all hounds).

“Monkey & Baboon” – Dr. John

  190. ladymisskirroyale

I was wondering about extinct animals. Dodo got a go, so I guess dinosaurs are ok?

And darn, I was saving Aardvark for later…

And if the Chipmunk Song gets a go, then I’m playing “Go Go Gophers” – cartoon theme song. Weren’t they cute?

  191. ladymisskirroyale

And to continue with the rodent theme:

“Prairie Dog” by Laika (who herself was also a dog, not the band because Margaret Fiedler is very nice)

  192. Yeah, but the Go Go Gophers weren’t a recording act, though I’d rather listen to them than the friggin’ Chipmuncks.

“The Llama Song” – Burton Earny

  193. ladymisskirroyale

Didn’t Burton also do “Rubber Ducky”?

I was saving up my aardvark track: “Does Anyone Here Have an Aardvark?” NY’ers – remember that?

So in the meantime, to get back to serious:

  198. From one of those outfits the kids are all wild about down at the discotheque: Mr. Bungle’s “Platypus”

  199. Umm, ladymiss, “Caribou” was already used…by you.

“Cobra Versus Mongoose” – Shonen Knife

  200. ladymisskirroyale

Oh. What I must have been really thinking was…..
    “Pelican Narrows” by Caribou.

  201. “Mosquitoes” – Shonen Knife

  202. “Pigmy Jerboa” – Shonen Knife

  203. “Marmoset” – Rapeman

  204. “Gokiburu(Cockroach Mannerism)” – Shonen Knife

  205. ladymisskirroyale

    “A Loon” – Kristin Hersh

  206. ladymisskirroyale

    So no La Cucaracha then.

How about “Fish” – Throwing Muses

  207. “Wart Hog” – The Ramones

  208. “Slug” – The Ramones

  209. ladymisskirroyale

“Polar Bear” – Ride or Charlatans

See you in a few hours. I’m off to the Natural History Museum and the record store.

  210. “Maggot Brain” Funkadelic

  211. hrrundivbakshi

Once again, cdm has created a ridiculous, highly destructive monster of a thread, and I refuse to play anymore. At least, I refuse to play anymore after I say:

TUBE SNAKE BOOGIE, by ZZ Top.

A “tube snake” is absolutely an animal — I’ve got one myself!

    HVB

  212. BigSteve

I love the song Maggot Brain, but maggots are not a type of animal but rather the larval phase of development in flies or other insects.

  213. Killjoy!

  214. “Sloth” – Fairport Convention

  215. Mr. Moderator

Nice use of the Pince Nez, BigSteve!

    Nice comeback with “Sloth,” bobbybittman!

At the moment, I’ve got nothing but compliments.

  216. Thanks, Mod, but no love for HVB’s little funny? I liked it.

  217. Dance away the heartache with Roxy Music’s “Nightingale.”

  218. “Woodpecker” – Tony Joe White

  219. bostonhistorian

    Ginger Bottles “Goldfish”

http://www.last.fm/music/Ginger+Bottles because I know at some point some of these bands sound totally made up…

  220. “Tarantula” – Smashing Pumpkins

  221. The Black Hawk War, etc, etc… – Sufjan Stevens

  222. BigSteve

The Owl and the Pussycat, Luna

  223. plasticsun

What? No one has listed “Phenomenal Cat” by the Kinks?!!! Whilst I’m thinking Kinks, how about Apeman?

  224. “Poodle Party” – The Dickies

  225. plasticsun, apes & cats have already been used, so they’re off the board.

  226. Mr. Moderator

No love for HVB’s “little funny,” bobbyb:) When this thread was launched I figured HVB would eventually make this joke. Somehow, the longer this thread goes on, HVB will figure out a way to work in a poop joke too. I’ve loves me some HVB, though, don’t you worry!

  227. Mr. Moderator

Aha! I’ve literally got a song with “animals” in the title: “Animals,” by Talking Heads.

I am (at least for now) Last Man Standing!

  228. Speaking of that, how long IS this thread going to go on? Is there a time limit or anything?

  229. ladymisskirroyale

Just letting you all know, I have at my fingertips at least another 15 animals that haven’t been mentioned yet. You see, this thread constitutes a perfect storm for Mr. Royale and me. Both us of are music geeks, and Mr. Royale happens to have an encyclopedic knowledge of animals.

BTW, we thought maggots was a fair post. And tube snake was inspiring…

How about, in a similar vein, “Looking for the Jackalope” by Laika? They are all over the postcards in AZ?

  230. ladymisskirroyale

    “Starfish and Coffee” – Prince

  231. “Catfish” – Bob Dylan

  232. trigmogigmo

    “Gerbil” by Filter

  233. “Bumble Bee” – LaVern Baker

  234. hrrundivbakshi

Mod is right. I owe this silly thread at least one more contribution:

    “Dung Beetle” by Supernatural.

Having now covered ZZ Top *and* feces, I consider my contribution to the erudition of Rock Town Hall complete.

    HVB

  235. ladymisskirroyale

Well, this animal is well known for throwing it’s feces, so here you are, HVB:

    “Orangutan” by Bow Wow Wow

  236. ladymisskirroyale

Brown shit makes me think of frijoles, which makes me think of Taco Bell, which reminds me of:

“Chihuahua” also by Bow Wow Wow

  237. “Possum Kingdom” – The Toadies

  238. ladymisskirroyale

“I Fought Piranhas” by The White Stripes

  239. “Spanish Flea” – Herb Alpert

I think fleas have been used, though funny song.

    “Pony” by Swirlies

  241. “Little Lamb Dragonfly” – Paul McCartney

  242. I used pony already…

  243. ladymisskirroyale

“Baby Amoeba Goes South”: Buffalo Daughter

  244. BigSteve

I’m afraid we’re going to drive away the new prog fans as they find out just how geeky this group is, so …

    Lizard, King Crimson

  245. ladymisskirroyale

Speaking of geeky, how about this for a double?

    “Spider Monkey” by Beth Gibbons

  246. “Several Species Of Small Furry Animals…” – Pink Floyd

    No?

“Hornet’s Nest” – Jimi Hendrix & Curtis Knight

  247. BigSteve

And btw amoeba are not animals, and I’ll be pulling out the pince nez on anyone who tries to name something outside of Kingdom Animalia.

  248. BigSteve

    Mantis, Versus

  249. “Johnny Raven” – Kiki Dee

  250. “Panda Panda Panda” – Deerhoof

  251. “Zebra Man” – Bob James

  252. Oops! Zebra was done already. Sorry.

“Blood On A Porcupine Quill” – John French

…And I can’t even be bothered to check & see if porcupine was taken. I’m done. Have fun, whomever is left standing.

  253. Mairsydotes! (Mares)

  254. Leo Kottke, “The Last of the Arkansas Greyhounds”

  255. ladymisskirroyale

Raven and porcupine have been already done.

So are we differentiating between genders of animals? If so: “The Bitch Is Back” could suffice.

If not, I play, “The Snow Leopard” by Shearwater.

  256. ladymisskirroyale

Just finished watching “Date Night.” I think other people have commented on it being so-so, and the soundtrack not very inspiring. It made me want to hear, “God Loves A Terrier” from Best In Show.

  257. plasticsun

“Where are the Prawns?” by the Softboys

  258. plasticsun

Oops – sorry I guess I missed Boston Historian’s previous post. I’m clearly a bit out of it.

  259. trigmogigmo

“Gecko” by The Creatures (siouxsie and budgie 1983)

And with that I think I am down to my last card…

  260. “The Badger Song”, Dead Milkmen… on “Bucky Fellini”

  261. “The Ox” instrumental from The Who Sings My Generation.

Just to get them out, two animals who are already off the board:
“Cucharacha” and “Waiting for the Worms” Pink Floyd.

  262. HVB, don’t make me start my LMS for songs in 4/4 time…

  263. ladymisskirroyale

Trig – good one. I was saving “Gecko.” And I was trying to think of a badger song, other than that Tapes N’ Tapes song that has it in the lyrics.

    So, another Shearwater track: “Rooks.”

  264. In the interest of freeing up this board for more important topics, I will declare an end to this LMS at 3pm Eastern Standard Time. This should give Ladymiss, who I believe is on the West Coast, plenty of time to wake up, get some coffee and prepare for her big showdown with Bobby Bittman (and of course, anyone else who is holding on to an obscure answer in the hopes of sandbagging their way to victory).

The last entry with the time 9/27/10 @ 02:59 shall be declared the weiner. Godspeed to you all.

  265. Mink Coat At The Bus Stop – Ricki Lee Jones

  266. Also, if this was a Battle Royale instead of a LMS, Ladymiss would totally win with That’s A Moray

  267. trigmogigmo

Ladymisskirroyale, you made me realize I had overlooked what would have been the 4th XTC animal here, “Rook”. And I think you scored bonus on that one — never heard of the band Shearwater, so I googled, and neither did I know that Shearwater is a bird.

  268. mockcarr

    It’s A Shame About Ray – Lemonheads

I assume this song is about how terrible they taste, since they are very cool looking.

  269. Mr. Moderator

    “Earwig,” Dead Milkmen!

  270. BigSteve

    Peacock Suit, Paul Weller

  271. meanstom

    Dead Milkmen’s Filet of Sole.

  272. mockcarr

Kid by the Pretenders. A baby goat, right?

  273. Mr. Moderator

Definitely. Wasn’t it this song that marked Chrissie Hynde’s PETA membership?

  274. Mr. Moderator

31 minutes to go before the Comments are CLOSED!

  275. mockcarr

    Insects Rule – Brendan Benson.

You are all holding out for another 25 minutes. I see.

  276. bostonhistorian

I can neither confirm nor deny that I am holding out for another twenty minutes.

  277. misterioso

They Might Be Giants, “Bee of the Bird of the Moth.”

  278. mockcarr

I knew that band had to have a few, but I couldn’t think of any.

  279. Mr. Moderator

    5 minutes left!

  280. crowded house – elephants

  281. misterioso

Bob Dylan, “Day of the Locusts.”

  282. mockcarr

Too Much Joy – Otter Song

  283. Mr. Moderator

    Elephants was already used.

  284. “Jackals, False Grails: the Lonesome Era” – Pavement

  285. trigmogigmo

“Honey Bee” by Tom, Petty from Wildflowers. (Under the dog/Dalmation rule.)

The Mike Campbell Appreciation Society recommends the tasty lead guitar on that song.

  286. Buzzard and Dreadful Crows – Guided By Voices

  287. we are siamese if you please

  288. bostonhistorian

Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, “The Gold Finch and the Red Oak Tree”

[CONGRATULATIONS, bostonhistorian, YOU ARE LAST MAN STANDING as of 2:59:53! – Mr. Mod]
