An example of what I’m talking about is Pretty in Pink. Although the movie uses a new version of the Psychedelic Furs song, the movie’s not really based on the song, is it? I think it was just a coincidence that a hip, new song was sitting there that could tie into the marketing of Molly Ringwald while the movie was in production.
On the other hand, Alice’s Restaurant is an adaptation of the song, so that one wouldn’t count. Same goes for movies “adapted from” entire albums, like Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band or Tommy.
Got me?
Finally, movies with titles that were picked up for use in rock songs after the release of the movie, such as Thunder Road, are not elligible. The possibly coincidental or at least not essential rock reference of the movie title must follow the release of the song. I hope that’s clear enough to get us going on this difficult task. Don’t worry, I think I’m holding the answer that will make me Last Man Standing!
Arthur the movie has nothing whatsoever to do with the Kinks album, except that Dave Davies maybe drank as much as Dudley Moore.
Good sir, you have GOT IT all right! At the moment, mockcarr is Last Man Standing.
Stand by Me. Is that right?
Mod, did you get my e-mail? I changed jobs and forgot to update my account here but I just fixed that.
Correct, cdm. Enjoy the view while it lasts!
Yes, I did get you new address. Thanks.
Can’t Hardly Wait. The Replacements song doesn’t even show up until the credits are rolling.
High Fidelity?
The Elvis Costello song is not in the movie although ANOTHER of his songs (Shipbuilding) is…
A particularly atrocious movie entry – Jumpin’ Jack Flash
Good ones, so far, especially Can’t Hardly Wait, which was my ace in the hole. I don’t recall ever hearing of that movie until the other night, when I was flipping channels and saw it coming on. Damn you, sammymaudlin!
The tough part about this LMS is that these kinds of movies are usually utterly forgettable. I know there are a bunch more but I’m drawing a blank.

I asked Paul Garisto, drummer for the Psych Furs during the PiP era and all-around great guy, for his take on Mod’s supposition. He said simply:
I agree.
HVB
Thanks to your friend Paul, HVB. That meant a lot. Take that, those of you who think I just make stuff up!
I saw a straight to video release titled “Lick My Love Pump”, & it had NOTHING to do with Nigel Tufnel’s classical instrumental masterpiece.
Oh, does that heinous piece of crap, Soul Man, count? It’s got that goofy joke duet btn Sam Moore & Lou Reed on the title song, but other than that, it’s got nothing to do with the original song. It’s about some white kid trying to exploit affirmative action programs to get into college (now, THERE is a concept for you. Only during the Reagan years…).
You know the guys that wrote the Soul Man script likely thought it was a Blues Bros. original.
Mockcarr,
Ouch..to also having seen “Jumpin’ Jack Flash”. I think this was the moment it hit me that Ms. Goldberg actually had no talent what so ever (left it all on the stage, I guess). God what a wash out she turned out to be.
In America, it was called Cowboy Bebop: The Movie, but the real title is Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door. The show itself featured many episodes named after rock tunes (Honky Tonk Women, etc.). I’m no die-hard fan of anime, but I like this show quite a bit because it varied from the usual schoolgirl/giant robot fare. Plus, it’s loaded with music references.

You could make a case for the Sgt. Pepper movie/trainwreck as “Not Really Having Anything to Do With the Point of Reference.”
Dazed and Confused.
Napoleon Dynamite, supposedly NOT named after Elvis Costello’s pseudonym on Blood and Chocolate yet having nothing to do with that album nevertheless.
Satisfaction, starring Justine Bateman, Julia Roberts and Liam Neeson.

Roxanne was Cyrano De Bergerac redone, not a Police song about a hooker.
Yeah but her name was Roxanne in Cyrano De Bergerac.
What I mean is she’s not a hooker in the movie.
