You know the drill: one band/artist per entry, last entry is the Last Man Standing!

I want to know how many bands you can name that hail from, *and* that made/recorded at least some of their music in, the American desert Southwest. For the purpose of clarification, I say the “desert Southwest” includes the following states only:

Arizona
New Mexico

I realize this is topographically, meteorologically and culturally incorrect, but I don’t care. No answers featuring the desert parts of Colorado, Utah, California and Texas. Let’s keep this one short and focused, people.

I’ll start with:

Buddy Holly — Clovis, New Mexico

Buddy Holly recorded at Norman Petty’s studio in Clovis, but he “hails from” Lubbock TX, so I’m calling shenanigans on that first one.

Anyway I’ll go ahead and get one of the obvious ones out of the way — Calexico.

  2. Meat Puppets are from, I believe, Phoenix AZ.

Being from AZ, this category oughta be a slam dunk for me. Let’s see, ummmmmmmmm-

    The Gin Blossoms

And I’m a little peeved that jazcoleman took the Meat Puppets as they are one of my favorite bands. Snooze ya looze I guess.

    How about Big Sand?

  5. Or for that matter, how about Giant Sand?

I’ve been slammed with the Pince Nez, deservedly!

  7. The Shins are from ABQ. I think they are based out of Portland now, though.

  8. mockcarr

I think the Tubes started in Phoenix, but became a San Francisco band or something.

Mockcarr, why on Earth do you know *that*?

  10. mockcarr

I was reminded of them because of a SCTV episode I watched a few weeks ago with them on the Fishin’ Musician. Maybe they said something about Phoenix, or maybe it was some fact gleaned from some a high school moment back when they had a couple of songs on the radio. I had to confirm it online beacuse I wasn’t sure, so I made the SF caveat.

Oh, BigSteve, you stole my thunder. I was just thinking what a load of dolts people were and I, too, fell into the “snooze you lose” category.

Point of clarification, do ALL members of a band need to be from the Southwest? If so, that puts the Gin Blossoms out of the running. Although they report that they are from Tempe, AZ, when I spoke with them about this (all hail attendees of ASU!) they admitted that only one of them was from AZ and the rest were from somewhere Pace-salsa-like such as NJ. However, to be fair, maybe that was just their lineup at the time…

  17. ladymisskirroyale

    Oh, Green on Red.

  18. what laura says

  19. sammymaudlin

ladymiss- The original lineup was definitely all AZ guys. Their big songs were all originally recorded in AZ. Did you ever see them when they were still a bar band? They used to play the bar/club above The Spaghetti Co. on Mill Ave. Was that place called “Chuy’s”?

Green on Red or Alice Cooper was to be my next one…

    OK, ummmmmmmmm

    Naked Prey

  20. Ohhhh, Flotsam and Jetsam. Phoenix.

  21. ladymisskirroyale

Sammy, I saw them in about 1989 or so, so am guessing not the original lineup. And I had forgotten about “Chuy’s.” Thanks for the reminder!

Michael Martin Murphy, of “Wildfire” fame, lives here in Taos, NM! Man, I hope to run into him and get a chance to duet on that number this week!

  29. sammymaudlin

Mr. Misty Float? WTF?! Who’s that? If we’re going that obscure then I’m going with The Jetzons. I at least have proof of existence.
