Our lead-off song contains a number of specific references to classes in school. It’s OK to cite songs that repeat any of the examples contained within. I wonder how many other rock ‘n roll songs refer to specific classes commonly found in school.
Remember: songs that mention specific classes in school (eg, algebra, history, and french class), not any old song about school or songs referring to teachers of unspecified classes. Thanks!
Sam Cooke, “Wonderful World (Don’t know much)”.
I guess I should have watched the video first.
Ha! Thanks for kicking it off, nevertheless. There’s one obvious song that comes to mind for me and another song that also has a class name as its title. I assume the song uses the lyric.
Elvis Costello – “Chemistry Class”
That was the first that came to mind for me!
It’s hard to forget a chemistry song that makes the pun “Are you ready for the final solution?”.
School Days by Chuck Berry has American History and Practcal Math.
Johnny Cash’s “Straight A’s in Love” mentions algebra etc. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXbe92wgcyc
There must be at least one song by Rush, Yes and/or Rick Wakeman that mentions geometry.
Barnes & Barnes – “High School Gym”
“High School Gym
You could never win
Run ten miles
As fast as you can
Only to discover
You’re last again, Rats!
In the locker room
Dreadful minutes that reek of doom
Jock straps on the ceiling
Morons stink of sweat
My body has no feeling
How worse can it get?”
Doesn’t Geddy Lee yelp that before Lifeson works up some guitar/synth triplets in “Tom Sawyer?”
I don’t know about Rush but Yes and Wakeman were more art-school types who were none too concerned about math and geometry.
Peter Holsapple & Chris Stamey – Geometry

Nice!
“Sport” by the Bonzos, “Dear Mr. Poxham, would you kindly excuse Stephen from games today?”
“Common People” by Pulp – “she studied sculpture at St Martin’s College”
“Rock n Roll High School” – “well I don’t care about history…”
Stan, you’re new, so let me explain that you’re trying to be Last Man Standing. You don’t want to play all of your cards at the same time. Post one at a time, then wait and see if anyone can come up with another, and then you can one-up them.
Whoops, thanks Steve! I’ll go away and think again.
Billy Bragg “The Saturday Boy”. They sat together in double history twice a week.
There’s a track called Algebra on Morel’s Lucky Strike album.
I need a ruling on a song I assumed would qualify. If the song’s title includes a class but the class is not in the song’s lyrics, can that count as being mentioned in the song? I think not, but let me know if you disagree.
The Undertones, “My Perfect Cousin”
He’s got a degree in economics
Maths – physics and bionics
Jeez, how did I overlook that one?!?!
Popped into my head as soon as I saw the topic. Couldn’t believe it hadn’t been used.
Ruling please – will you take Mark Mothersbaugh’s “Hardest Geometry Problem In the World”? It’s a favorite song of mine so that hopefully will mean something…

One of Randy Newman’s more famous songs is Political Science (otherwise known as Let’s Drop the Big One).
“Please excuse me from gym…” – The Smiths “The Headmaster Ritual”
“Abigail Beecher (Our History Teacher)” by Freddie “Boom Boom” Cannon in 1964.
That’s the one I wanted the ruling on (and was surprised wasn’t suggested early on). Does he ever say the class name in the song, and if it’s only in the title does it count? This is very important to determinine, isn’t it? 🙂
Free Electric Band – Albert Hammond (“My father sent me money and I spent it pretty fast, on a girl I met in Berkley in
a social science class”)
Charlie Brown — The Coasters (“Who calls the English teacher ‘daddy-o’?”)
“Leaning over me, he was trying to explain the laws of geometry”
Abba – When I Kissed The Teacher
The Replacements, “Fuck School”
Future’s in wood shop, right!
To a law job, night school
Joni Mitchell — Ray’s Dad’s Cadillac
“Ray’s Dad teaches math”
Religion class in Jethro Tull’s “Wind Up”: “They can excommunicate me / on my way to Sunday School”.
Maybe stretching it a bit.
Ah, it’s nice to see someone else besides me quoting Abba.
The Fall – Birmingham School of Business School
Who calls the *english* teacher daddy-o?
Charlie Brown – The Coasters.
I am LMS!
As a complete newbie I don’t understand these things, is there a cut off?
Four Tops – Back to School Again, “Geometry and History is just a pain Biology and Chemistry destroys my brain”
Er, haven’t we had that one already?
I believe so. For shame, andyr!
There is no cut off, unless otherwise stated (a couple of these have resulted in a prize). Typically, once the post falls of The Main Stage (ie, the first 10 posts showing) it’s forgotten about. If you play your cards right, you might get a final suggestion added right before or after that move to page 2. However, there have been instances in which a newcomer stumbles on the post a year later and tops us all. Good luck, my friend!
“No more science, history
English is just Greek to me”
I Don’t Want to Go to School — The Donnas
Does “Bitch School” count?
“We ain’t never gonna confess we cheated at the math test”
Public Animal #9 by Alice Cooper
