Hearing Lou’s music as it was meant to sound requires a little work in today’s clip. The interviewer asks questions in English and French; Lou seems to understand whatever’s thrown his way and answer back in English. French subtitles will aid our French-speaking readers. First, Lou discusses the universality of New York humor and love. Then, as the YouTube clock runs down to the 4:05 mark, a discussion of the album Magic & Loss ensues. A minute later, after the interviewer bemoans the public’s dismissal of this masterpiece and encourages viewers to revisit the album, our always forward-thinking hero says, “Now they should hear the new one, then they should go back and listen to Magic & Loss.”
To those of you who have questioned the point of this Rock Town Hall series, I hope this answers some of your questions. Believe Lou: hear his music as it was meant to sound and see if it doesn’t enrich your experience of hearing earlier releases as well.
The music as it was meant to sound just keeps on coming.

Nice find, Oats. Thanks!
Finally some Lou Reed I can understand, even if it takes French pronounciation. Magic and Loss is the only solo Lou Reed album I have, mostly because my cousin Shannon engineered part of it. Her story is that he pretty much went through all the senior staff at Electric Lady, and it fell to her through the process of elimination. Sort of a “why not her” decision, because I think she was still just assisting for the most part. She wasn’t the gossipy type to give you all the details – I don’t remember hearing about any transvestites or the “ghost of Doc Pomus” being around or anything. Too bad she was unaware of the career producing albums in France she could have had.
If Shannon ever wants to chirp, send her our way. I can run her words through a masking device to hide her true identity.
Oh, no you don’t, Mod — I got first dibs on Shannon. I’ve been trying to get Mockcarr to set me up with her for, what, 23 years now! Geez!
Hey, I’m a happily married man. I’m not looking for a date, just some inside dirt on Lou!
