Gerry, I got the time to give this clip another view. It’s not bad, but I think I’d like it better if I could better see the women. That grainy, B&W Look of the video was cool at first, but I kept waiting for the Wizard of Oz-like moment when everything sprang into rich, vibrant color.
Gerry wasn’t talking about the vid precisely. I think he just liked this tune much more than he thought he would given that, you-know-who, is behind it.
I think, if I can speak for Gerry, he wanted to point out how tight the back-up band is here, The Aggrolites. These guys back up all the big Jamaican reggae and ska bands that come to L.A. They are way more roots than all the typical post Specials punk/ska bands are.
Problem is, like roots reggae and ska, is that for uptight dudes like us we need a little more pop and structure.
Tight, fun but ultimately forgettable:
I know we’re all still wincing a bit from the whole “Tim Armstrong dissing Mod” thing but Tim actually brings this needed pop to The Aggrolites. For your musical consideration.
Try to ignore the video. I know it looks like a scene cut from Cruising.
Not up to The Specials bar but as far as these post-post-ska ska-revival bands go I was taken with how traditional it is. Especially considering Tim’s Rancid and Agent Orange roots.
For those interested in The Aggrolites I do recommend their Dirty Reggae release as it has a bit more of the punch I need. Here’s a track:
Tim’s here with me now. He’s wondering what’s up with your “Main Stage Upgrade” reference. Should he expect any interruptions or changes in his Rock Town Hall viewing?
You guys talking again? That’s cool.
Yeah, turns out he wanted our band off the bill, but he’s asked me to do a sprawling Sandinista-style collaboration with him.
