Hello fellow Townsfolk. You might have noticed some new additions to the bottom of the RTH page. We are trying out some new features. Don’t be alarmed.

We are responding to the outcry received regarding the ability to listen to the latest Saturday Night Shut-In without having to find the post. At the very bottom you’ll see the new “This Week’s Saturday Night Shut-In” player. It has the latest SNSI cued up and ready to be played. If you click the list button (4 horizontal lines) a playlist will reveal the previous 3 SNSIs. The player will auto-advance to the next one when the one playing ends or you can click the >> advance button or click on the individual SNSI in the playlist or click the random arrows to go for Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride. Click inside the white volume area to increase or decrease the volume.

There is one kink here that we in The Back Office haven’t conquered yet, but we’ll say the player is 90% operational (that’s an A-).

Above that is our new social media bar where you can click to visit our Twitter, Facebook or YouTube page. On the right side you can FB Like us. Also you can Tweet or g+ whatever page you are on. Who does that google+ thing? The Back Office is skeptical.

OK, so what if these new things are an eyesore for you? Well, got that covered. Click the “X” and the player will hide. Click the white down arrow “” (but pointing down) and the social bar will hide. Voila! The X and arrow will still be visible if you want to open them back up.

If you have issues or ideas, this is the place to air them.

Thank you for your attention.

George Jones dies. cliff sovinsanity puts up a great post about it here on RTH. My dad, big George Jones fan, calls me about the death and has read the post. He’s thrilled that Townsman telewacker posts a link to this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6j2YBD–1U. I talk about the White Lightening video in cliff’s post and mention that the Velvet Undergound (not sure he knows who they are/were) did a song called White Light/White Heat that might have been about a different intoxicant. He says it sounds like a song some old bluegrass guy, Ralph Stanley, did.

Born in Stratton, Virginia in 1927, Ralph Stanley

Says it was featured in the recent movie Lawless. So I check it out and…wait…wha??????

Turns out…

Sounds of the Hall in roughly 33 1/3 minutes!

This one’s a bit lengthy, but it’s one of those “if you don’t like what you hear, stick around cuz it’ll change” kind of things.

Mr-Wint-and-Mr-Kidd

Ok, so every time I hear Steely Dan on the radio, I immediately think of Bond’s Mr. Wint & Mr. Kidd. Maybe part of the reason is that I don’t really know the “Band” — Fagen and Decker — other than small snatches I’ve seen of them — but their legend looms large in my mind.

On the surface, this is a band that I should not like a wit. Jazz Fusion! Studio musicians!! Odd vocal stylings. What gives?? Yet — although I don’t OWN any SD — I like them when I hear them. And the solo for “Reelin’ in the Years” by said studio axeman is one of my all-time faves.

By looming large, I mean I picture a studio teeming with ’70s excesses — women in jumpsuits, coke, shag carpeting, etc.

So I probably won’t be downloading and Steely Dan for the old iPod. But if I’m ever at some cool party, chock-full of modern, Eames-inspired furniture, and this is coming out of the Blaupunkt’s, I’ll nod my head and say, Yes…I can live with this.

I know most bands have a persona that is larger than life. But did Steely Dan ever try to cultivate it the way that, say Zeppelin did?

Should I break down and buy this band? Help …

No more show for the Possum. This morning came word of the passing of George Jones at 81. Not unlike Keef and Ozzy Osbourne, his death has been looming for many years but he managed to keep hanging in there. Peering through the haze of insobriety and violence was a passionate guy with a huge soul. His charm and quick wit endeared him to millions outside of the country world. His influence is staggering not solely in music but also his credibility in Nashville if he chose to make or break someones career. His era of duets with Tammy Wynette are his peak. Please sign in the comment section with your recollections of the man.
